Research Coordinator

Serves as lead coordinator for specific aspects of research projects and/or operations in one of the following research areas:
Fish Ecology and Monitoring, Benthic Ecology and Monitoring, or Ocean and Climate Change, which includes designing, evaluating, expanding, implementing, and improving sampling methodologies, field experiments, survey and training protocols, procedures, and operations.

Analyzes information and objectives from a strategic and operational perspective, determines requirements and resources, and makes recommendations to the managers, investigators, and sponsors.

Defines project scopes based on business requirements and contributes to the planning, development, and implementation of the project's budget.

Oversees execution of planned projects and evaluates project outcomes.

Processes, analyzes, and summarizes multi-disciplinary data from various coral reef research surveys and conservation projects.

Prepares summary statistics, presentation graphics, and reports of coral reef research and monitoring efforts.

Participates in research cruises and marine ecosystem surveys to assess, monitor, and mitigate threats to the coral reef ecosystems of the US Pacific Islands.

Prepares scientific reports for publication and presentation.

Prepares and delivers presentations as part of the program's education and outreach efforts.

Travels to workshops, conferences, and meetings to gather information and to present and train interested parties or partners.

Participates in field activities, such as research cruises aboard vessels, small boats, site visits, or shore-based operations.

Occasionally operates forklift to move gear and equipment.

Operates small boats and occasionally transports, launches, and recovers small boats using trailers.

Education: Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in a Biological Science, Marine Science, or Ecosystem Science, or related field involving studies of marine science or coral reef ecosystems.

• One to three (1-3) years of experience with marine research projects, which included data analysis, report writing, and marine underwater survey techniques or ocean engineering and development.
• One to three (1-3) years of experience in working with a marine research project focused on coral reef ecosystem monitoring in the Pacific.
• Experience must include: working on interdisciplinary research teams, and coordinating with partner agencies concerned with research, conservation, and management of ecosystems.
• Extensive experience working at sea for extended periods of time (i.e., thirty to sixty (30-60 days) aboard research or fisheries vessels. Experience with underwater digital videography and photography.
• Experience in small boat handling and maintenance. Experience with identifying coral reef ecosystem organisms, particularly Indo-Pacific species, and quantifying abundances.

• Working knowledge of at least one (1) of the following areas: oceanographic processes, reef fish taxonomy, coral taxonomy, algal taxonomy, coral reef ecology, photogrammetry applications, acoustic mapping, or ocean engineering.
• Working knowledge of scientific and operational requirements for various marine underwater survey techniques and field experiments.
• Knowledge and understanding of principles and practices in the fields of biometrics, community ecology, population biology, conservation biology, landscape ecology, and natural resource management.
• Knowledge of statistical procedures to perform data analyses, including interpretation of results pertaining to ecosystem processes.
