Air Quality Research Scientist

Minimum monthly salary: $3,822 per month

Duties:

Conducts collaborative air quality research. Produces air quality forecasts for volcanic emissions. Implements air quality forecast system upgrades and maintenance, and changes to the underlying forecast software based on the Vog (volcanic emission dispersion) model and forecast verification activities. Oversees the development and maintenance of the Vog Measurement and Prediction (VMAP) program air quality forecasting system for volcanic emissions. Uses a variety of software programs to work with meteorological observation datasets, create scientific data visualizations, and conduct statistical analyses and Langrangian modeling.

Writes scientific papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Presents research findings at scientific conferences. Writes proposals in support of the VMAP program. Responsible for website maintenance and development. Archives forecast and observations. Participates in public outreach activities. Installs and services instruments as needed. Coordinates forecast with local, State, and Federal stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Education/Training:
PhD from an accredited college or university in Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, or a closely related field.

Experience:

At least one (1) year of experience in the following: a high-performance computing environment; experience using UNIX and LINUX environments, writing shell scripts in Bash and Perl; experience working with meteorological observation datasets; programming experience; experience in forecast modeling and verification, and website development.

Abilities/Knowledge/

Skills:

Knowledge of Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences principles. Proficient in at least one (1) of the following languages: R, IDL, Python, or Matlab. Proficient in NetCDF and Grib2 data formats. Good scientific writing skills, including papers published in, or submitted to, refereed journals. Ability to conduct scientific data analysis. Must be organized. Ability to communicate well, multitask, work independently and as part of a team, and respond in a timely manner as needed during high impact events.

Ability to create scientific data visualizations. Strong programming/scripting (e.g., Python) skills.

Physical/Medical Requirements:
Must be able to lift at least twenty (20) pounds to install meteorological equipment as needed.

Experience working in a multidisciplinary environment. Experience with outreach and public communication. Background in air-quality meteorology, ideally using both observations and numerical models.
