Branch Overview
The Solid and Hazardous Waste Branch works to protect public health and the environment from the improper management and disposal of hazardous waste and solid waste, and from releases of petroleum and other hazardous substances from leaking underground storage tanks.
SalarySalary: $6,043 to $7,351 per month (SR-24, Step D to I).
ResponsibilitiesThe primary purpose of this position is to independently perform difficult and complex geological studies, reviews, and investigations at hazardous waste, solid waste, and leaking underground storage tank sites and evaluate the environmental and health issues of those releases. In addition, this position is responsible for providing technical assistance on geological and hydrological issues as they pertain to corrective actions at various types of sites.
The position also provides technical support for the U.S. Navy Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Tanks Special Project.
Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
Minimum Qualification Requirements- Legal Authorization to Work: Candidates must be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
- Education: Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree and major in geology, hydrology, or a related field of geoscience. Experience may be substituted in lieu of the required education as described below.
- Specialized
Experience:
Three (3) years of progressively responsible professional geological or hydrological work experience. This includes, but is not limited to, geologic or hydrologic mapping; field observations and sample collection for laboratory analyses; devising field and laboratory techniques; preparing and interpreting data; investigating the influences of climate, topography and water bodies; preparing professional scientific and economic reports; and supervising personnel. - Para‑professional
Experience:
One‑phase technical geological work (such as collecting samples) is not sufficient; the experience must provide professional knowledge of principles and applications of geology, including closely related sciences, and demonstrate independent planning and organization of studies. - Teaching
Experience:
Considered qualifying if accompanied by significant research, direction of graduate‑level research, advising, and field/lab studies.
Employees appointed to temporary positions may gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months. Once a member of the civil service, the employee becomes eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions.
