Responsibilities
- You will have knowledge of chemical principles, theories, practices and methodology sufficient to perform the full range of duties involved in the chemical and physical analysis and testing of various substances.
- You will provide information pertinent to a variety of programs and problems involving chemical analysis for which established methods are not substantially applicable, inconclusive, greatly variable and sometimes unrelated.
- You will have a significant amount of professional laboratory experience with a variety of instruments/samples in order to provide the level of authoritative responses and complex analytical solutions required at this level of expertise.
- You will be assigned the analysis of materials that are problematical or where conventional methods and method adjustments have produced inconclusive or contradictory results.
- You will use your extensive knowledge and experience of analytical methods and instrumentation to develop the best analytical approach to the problem.
- You will plan and conduct chemical and instrumental studies of a very complex and difficult nature in support of regulatory ship repair requirements.

Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present; participation in medical surveillance programs is required.
This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS, including remote or isolated sites. Travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods may be required.
This position requires work onboard ships.
This position requires accurate visual acuity and color discrimination.
This position may require work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements; overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
QualificationsIn addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, applicants must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional Chemist, applying chemistry theories, concepts, and principles to conducting investigations, testing, analysis, and interpretation of the composition, physical and chemical properties, molecular structure, and chemical reactions of substances in a shipyard laboratory to support the safety and efficiency of naval activities.
EducationApplicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements.
- Degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
- Or a combination of education and experience equivalent to a major, with at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
