Position: GEOLOGIST I - OAHU (OHHI)
Location: East Honolulu

Job Overview

The Department of Health’s Solid and Hazardous Waste Branch is looking for a qualified professional to independently conduct complex geologic and hydrologic studies at hazardous waste, solid waste, and leaking underground storage tank sites. The incumbent will evaluate environmental and health issues resulting from waste releases and provide technical assistance for corrective actions, including support for the U.S. Navy Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Tanks Special Project.

Responsibilities
  • Perform difficult and complex geologic studies, reviews, and investigations at hazardous waste, solid waste, and leaking underground storage tank sites.
  • Evaluate environmental and health issues related to releases of petroleum and other hazardous substances.
  • Provide technical assistance on geological and hydrological issues as they pertain to corrective actions at various types of sites.
  • Offer technical support for the U.S. Navy Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Tanks Special Project.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
  • Legal Authorization to Work: U.S. citizenship, national, or permanent resident alien, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in geology, hydrology, or a related geoscience field from an accredited college or university.
  • Professional

    Experience:

    Three (3) years of progressively responsible professional geological or hydrological work, including mapping, field observations, sample collection, laboratory analysis, and preparation of professional reports.
  • Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated knowledge of geological or hydrological principles, including physical geology, structural geology, stratigraphy, mineralogy, geologic mapping, well hydraulics, and service water hydrology.
  • Additional

    Experience:

    Teaching or research experience in geology or hydrology with field and laboratory component may be considered.
  • Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
  • Position Level: Fully competent level; not an entry‑level or trainee position.
Salary & Benefits

Salary: $6,043 to $7,351 per month (SR‑24, Step D to I). Hiring rates are based on availability of funds, applicant qualifications, and other factors.

Employees appointed to temporary positions may receive membership in the civil service after a satisfactory six‑month probation period, providing access to promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent and other temporary positions.
