SOEST Ocean Technician (SUBSEA)

The Research Corporation of the University of Hawai'i is seeking to fill the position of SOEST Ocean Technician (SUBSEA).

• Collects oceanographic observations at sea for the Schmidt Sciences SUBSEA project.
• Deploys and recovers autonomous underwater platforms, free-drifting arrays, and other oceanographic equipment.
• Conducts laboratory analysis on seawater samples and participates in field experiments.
• Tests and maintains oceanographic equipment and communicates with manufacturers to troubleshoot, service, and repair oceanographic equipment.
• Processes and quality-controls oceanographic observations.
• Drives to transport equipment.
• Organizes the shipment of oceanographic equipment in support of expeditions leaving from and returning to national and international ports.
• Prepares data reports.
• Communicates with the investigators of the SUBSEA project to support their sampling efforts.
• Participates in research cruises with up to two (2) months of international travel per cruise.

Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in the field of Oceanography, Ocean Engineering, or related field.

Experience: Three to five (3-5) years of experience in ocean sciences. Includes at least three (3) years of experience conducting fieldwork aboard vessels at sea.

Knowledge: Expert knowledge of oceanographic operations iliarity with autonomous underwater platforms, ocean biogeochemistry, and plankton ecology.

• Proven seamanship and demonstrated ability to collect oceanographic observations in the field.
• Demonstrated ability to deploy and recover instrumentation from a vessel preferably including autonomous underwater platforms.
• Demonstrated ability to prepare research reports in English language.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawai'i's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.

Secondary Qualifications: Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Oceanography or Ocean Engineering. Ability to use computer-assisted data acquisition and analysis programs including MATLAB. Experience piloting autonomous underwater vehicles. Participated in a collaborative research project involving several research institutes.
