Student Worker, Forensic Sciences Laboratory Assistant

The responsibilities of this position include assisting the Professors in the laboratory and other tasks related to the Forensic Sciences Unit.

Forensic Sciences & Technology Chair

Indirect Report to:
School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Faculty

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Preparing the lab for daily exercises.
  • Being available to assist both the Professor and the students.
  • Cleaning glassware, materials, and lab surfaces after the completion of lab exercises.
  • Adhere to the prescribed laboratory dress code.
  • Other duties as assigned in the Forensic Sciences Unit.

Minimum Education

  • Current major in Forensic Sciences, Biochemistry, Biology, or Chemistry
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8
  • Minimum grade of B in FS 340/L or FS 455

Preferred

  • Minimum grade of B in FS 460/L

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Preparing for lab requires knowledge of solution preparation, supply location, scientific equipment operation and awareness of safety concerns in the lab exercise.
  • Work with hazardous materials may be involved so awareness of safety concerns in the lab is compulsory.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Organized with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize work and resources.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Attention to detail with a focus on thoroughness and quality.
  • High integrity, ethical standards, respect, responsibility, and teamwork.

Physical Requirements

Duties involve light work in an office and community setting and requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking inclines. Must be able to lift 20 pounds, walk the campus with ease, and have excellent motor skills. Must have finger dexterity. Must be able to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand.

Other Requirements

  • This is a part-time, non-exempt Student Worker position. Depending on the department's project cycles and workflow demands, additional hours or changes to the workday schedule may occasionally be required. Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and have a varying schedule when required
  • Performs such similar, comparable or related duties as may be assigned or required
  • Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner
