Important Information for ApplicantsThis position may be located on Kauai, Maui, and Oahu. Testing will be administered either on the applicant’s respective island or the applicant may be required to travel to Oahu. Applicants will be responsible for all costs associated with travel. Multiple tests may be administered back‑to‑back on a given day.

Shifts: All applicants must be available to work rotating shifts, including evening, weekends, and holidays. Mandatory overtime may be required.
Duties SummaryThe Adult Corrections Officer Recruit initially receives training and orientation in basic security and custodial duties; performs security and custodial duties at a variety of posts as assigned; and performs other related duties as assigned. As training progresses, the incumbent will eventually be independently responsible on an assigned shift at any post for maintaining the safekeeping and control of adult residents in group quarters and individual activities.
MinimumQualification Requirements
- Legal Authorization to Work: Citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
- Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent. One (1) year of work experience requiring reading, comprehension, and application of written directions qualifies as a substitute.
- General
Experience:
One (1) year of responsible work experience showing effective communication with supervisors and exchanging information. - Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
- Substitutions Allowed: Relevant substitutions as described in the complete Minimum Qualification Requirements.
- For certain positions, applicants must be female per Bona Fide Occupational Qualification requirements.
- All positions require the ability to work rotating shifts, including evenings/nights, weekends and holidays, and another consecutive eight (8) hour shift with last‑minute notification.
- Drug screening (required for conditional offers) and intensive background check.
- Minimum age of 21 years by completion of the Basic Corrections Recruit Class (BCRC).
- Any prior disciplinary action may be considered as part of the suitability assessment.
Applicants must meet all Federal and State regulations regarding firearms. Applicants may not have a conviction of domestic violence.
Pre‑Employment RequirementsApplicants must be physically able to perform essential duties enumerated, including sight, hearing, strength, and endurance tasks. A pre‑employment physical examination will occur before duties commence.
Probationary PeriodIf selected, you must pass all phases of the BCRC and additional drug tests during the nine‑month probationary period.
Transfer PolicyAdult Corrections Officers must remain at the assigned facility for three years from the date of appointment.
Testing InformationThe examination involves successive hurdles. Qualified candidates must successfully complete and pass each test phase before proceeding to the next.
- WRITTEN TEST (WT): Administered remotely through a proctored software platform.
- Correctional Officer Physical Abilities Test (COPAT): Administered on Oahu, Maui, and Kauai. Must complete within 3 minutes 45 seconds.
- ORAL INTERVIEW: Administered on Oahu, Maui, and Kauai.
- Pre‑Offer Non‑Medical Suitability Screening (POSS): Administered on Oahu, Maui, and Kauai.
- Criminal History Check/Comprehensive Background Investigation and Truth Verification Examination.
- Post‑Offer Psychological Evaluation and One‑on‑One Interview.
- Medical/Physical Examination: Must pass TB test and pre‑employment drug test.
