Fleet Mechanic Levels
The City of Honolulu is hiring fleet mechanics at various levels to repair and maintain the city’s fleet of automotive and heavy vehicles and equipment. Current vacancies are with the Department of Facility Maintenance, Automotive Equipment Service Division, and the Board of Water Supply, Water System Operations Division.
Fleet Mechanic I (BC‑08)Salary: $5,471 per month. This entry‑level opportunity is for individuals pursuing a career in repair and maintenance of automotive, heavy vehicles, and construction equipment. Candidates must meet the minimum qualification requirements and be capable of successfully attaining the skills needed to progress to the journey level.
Responsibilities include assisting in repair, maintenance, and basic overhaul tasks under supervision.
Experience & Training:
Completion of a recognized automotive or diesel mechanic program and demonstrated knowledge of basic components of automotive, diesel, and heavy equipment technology, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory, diagnostics, routine repairs and adjustments.
Salary: $6,079 per month. This level independently repairs and overhauls a variety of gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel vehicles and equipment within the City’s fleet, including light vehicles, construction equipment and heavy vehicles.
Responsibilities include independent repair and overhaul of all assigned vehicles and equipment and performing related duties as required.
Experience & Training:
Sufficient scope and quality of experience and training to competently perform the journey‑level skills and duties, including maintenance and overhauls of light and heavy motorized vehicles and equipment, with supplemental training to increase industry knowledge.
Salary: $6,300 per month. This level independently repairs, maintains, and overhauls heavy motorized vehicles and equipment in the City’s fleet, such as refuse trucks, dump trucks, cranes, bulldozers, rollers, and graders, on a substantially full‑time basis.
Responsibilities include the repair and overhaul of complex hydraulic and electrical systems on heavy vehicles, and performing other duties as required.
Experience & Training:
Sufficient scope and quality of experience and training to competently perform the journey‑level skills and duties of a Fleet Mechanic III, particularly repair and overhaul of complex hydraulic and electrical systems on heavy vehicles.
Depending on the department and position, candidates may be required to work weekends, holidays, and rotating and/or night shift work.
License & Certificate Requirements- Fleet Mechanic I:
Valid Driver’s License (Type 3); D.O.T. Medical Exam Certificate;
Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Type B) by end of probation; EPA Certificate by end of probation;
State Department of Transportation Safety Inspector Certificate;
Certificate of Fitness for Crane and Hoist Operator. - Fleet Mechanic II

Valid Driver’s License (Type 3); D.O.T. Medical Exam Certificate;
Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Type B) by end of probation; EPA Certificate by end of probation;
State Department of Transportation Safety Inspector Certificate;
Certificate of Fitness for Crane and Hoist Operator. - Fleet Mechanic III

State Department of Transportation Safety Inspector Certificate;
Certificate of Fitness for Crane and Hoist Operator.
Education or formal training in an automotive or diesel mechanics program may be credited toward your application if you provide documentation of your certificate(s) or degree.
- An Associate’s degree in Applied Science (AAS) in Diesel Mechanics Technology may qualify for the Fleet Mechanic I level.
- Certificate of Achievement in Automotive Technology or Diesel Mechanics may be given some credit along with relevant work experience.
- ASE certificates may be given some credit along with relevant work experience under a journey level mechanic.
