Overview

The Department of Facility Maintenance, Public Building and Electrical Maintenance Division is hiring a Carpenter-Cabinet Maker in Honolulu. Work hours are Monday – Friday, 6:50 AM – 3:20 PM. Under the direct supervision of the Lead Carpenter or Carpentry Supervisor, the position performs a variety of highly skilled journey‑level carpentry work involving the construction, renovation, and modification of public facilities and the fabrication and installation of storage cabinets, counters, shelving, tables, doors, and other accessory items such as key cabinets, drapery, valances, chalkboards, bulletin boards, etc.

The role also involves skilled carpentry work in the repair and maintenance of wide varieties of public buildings, related structures, and appurtenances under the jurisdiction of the Department of Facility Maintenance.

This position serves as a Disaster Response Worker and may require working beyond the normal workday, on weekends, and as necessary to meet schedules and deadlines. A national fingerprint‑based criminal history record check is required.

• Construct, renovate, and modify public facilities.
• Fabricate and install storage cabinets, counters, shelving, tables, doors, key cabinets, drapery, valances, chalkboards, and bulletin boards.
• Repair and maintain a wide variety of public buildings and related structures.
• Plan, lay out, and set up work; set up, adjust, and operate a variety of woodworking machines.
• Operate and maintain equipment and tools used in carpentry and cabinetmaking.
• Read, interpret, and work from plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches, and working drawings.
• Estimate time, labor, and material requirements.
• Rig and work from scaffolds and other high‑and‑difficult platforms.
• Construct and repair high‑grade wooden furniture and fine woodwork to close tolerances.
• Work with dexterity and safety while maintaining good working relationships with others.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

• Citizen, naturalized citizen, permanent resident alien of the United States, or a non‑citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

Experience Requirement

• Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform journey‑level skills and duties of the position.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, lay out, set up work, and operate woodworking machines.
• Experience reading and working from plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches, and working drawings.
• Ability to estimate time, labor, and material requirements.
• Experience rigging and working from scaffolds and other high and difficult platforms.
• Ability to construct and repair high‑grade wooden furniture and fine woodwork to close tolerances.
• Proficiency in handling weights and loads securely.

Note: Cabinet making experience alone is not qualifying. Experience must include both carpentry and cabinet making.

• Valid driver’s license (Type 3/automobile) prior to appointment.
• Valid forklift certification prior to completion of probation.

All required licenses and certificates must be obtained by the indicated dates and maintained throughout the course of employment.
