Position: HELPER/WORKER (VARIOUS TRADES).

Responsibilities

  • Assist the journey worker with common and typical tasks of the trade.
  • Perform more difficult work under close supervision.
  • Use basic hand and power tools.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Follow established safety procedures.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct‑deposit pay program.
  • New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12‑31‑59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • Must successfully complete a pre‑appointment physical examination.
  • Successful completion of a pre‑employment drug test (including marijuana) is required; failure to report or fail the test rescinds a tentative offer, and random testing may be conducted.
  • May require travel to CONUS and OCONUS, including remote or isolated sites; must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work may involve exposure to harmful physical and chemical agents (fumes, dust, heat, radiation, chemicals); participation in medical surveillance programs is required.
  • May require work during nights, weekends, and holidays; overtime or night differential pay may apply.
  • May require exposure to high noise levels.

Available Trades Shop 11 – Ship fitter

Lays out, fabricates, installs, removes, and repairs structural parts on ships and support equipment in accordance with blueprints.

Shop 17 – Sheet Metal Mechanic

Manufactures, installs, repairs, and modifies complex ventilation systems, furniture, light‑gauge bulkheads, lockers, and doors on submarines, surface craft, and in shop.

Shop 26 – Welder

Joins and cuts industrial and marine metals using complex welding and thermal cutting processes during the overhaul, repair, and modernization of submarines and surface craft.

Shop 31 – Machinist

Manufactures or refurbishes ship parts/components using machinery such as lathes, milling machines, boring machines, drilling presses, and CNC machines.

Shop 31 – Rubber Worker

Assists in the manufacturing of various rubber products to support repairs on vessels.

Shop 38 – Marine Machinery Mechanic

Removes, tests, overhauls, and repairs the main propulsion machinery, pumps, valves, steam turbines, engines, and propeller shafts on submarines and surface craft.

Shop 51 – Electrician

Assists journey‑level Electrician Mechanics in removal/install, alignment, repair, overhaul, and testing of a variety of ship components, including main propulsion machinery, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, ordnance machinery, hydraulic systems, laundry, galley, and machine shop equipment.

Shop 52 – Electronics Measurement Equipment Mechanic

Inspects, troubleshoots, repairs, overhauls, modifies, tests, aligns, measures, and calibrates complex electrical/electronic instruments and equipment.

Shop 67 – Electronics

Assists journey‑level Electronics Mechanics in removal, troubleshooting, repair, modification, installation, testing, and calibration of shipboard electronic equipment and components.
