Salary: $5,369 to $6,535 per month (SR-22, Step D to I).
Hiring rates based on availability of funds, applicant qualifications, and other relevant factors.
Lists of qualified candidates may be used to fill current permanent and temporary vacancies, and may also fill future positions. Temporary employees may gain civil service membership after satisfactory probation of at least six months. Civil service members become eligible for promotion and transfers. Temporary employees enjoy benefits of permanent employees except return rights and placement rights after reduction‑in‑force. Recruitment may be closed at any time.

Social Workers and Human Services Professionals aim to improve quality of life by preventing and remedying problems, expanding access, ensuring accountability, and coordinating service delivery. They work in hospitals, social service agencies, schools, correctional facilities, substance abuse, aging, and family violence programs. Regardless of setting, they apply professional concepts, principles, and techniques.
Position LevelsType A: Fully trained and experienced professional who independently handles highly complex cases with extreme hostility, multiple severe problems, or intense public scrutiny. Must manage cases requiring difficult service access and client compliance.
Type B: Fully trained and experienced professional who acts as a program specialist under higher‑level supervision. Tasks include policy drafting, training development, and implementation reporting within a narrow program scope.
Type C: Fully trained and experienced professional who primarily performs direct work typical of Level III while supervising a small team of less experienced professionals, with minimal program management duties.
Program AreasDepartment of Human Services (DHS)
Adult Protective & Community Services (APCS) – assess requests for adult social services; investigate abuse and neglect of dependent adults; arrange appropriate services for severely ill or disabled adults.
General Human Services (GHS) – work in employment services, child‑care licensing, statewide policy development, medical assistance, and vocational rehabilitation, including services for individuals with disabilities.
Minimum Qualification RequirementsThe application is evaluated based on the following requirements. Applicants must meet all for Social Worker or Human Services Professional as described below.
Legal Authorization To Work – Must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident alien, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
Basic Education
- Social Worker: Bachelor’s or Master’s in social work from an accredited program, or doctoral degree from an accredited university.
- Human Services Professional: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university with at least 12 semester credit hours in counseling, criminal justice, human services, psychology, social work, welfare, sociology, or related behavioral sciences.
Specialized Experience
Progressively responsible professional experience is required to demonstrate ability to perform duties. Years of experience vary by degree level and role.
Social Worker:
- BSW – 2 years of specialized experience.
- MSW – 1 year of specialized experience.
- Ph.D. – no specialized experience required.
Human Services Professional: 2.5 years of specialized experience.
Substitutions for education and experience are allowed as outlined in the Minimum Qualification Requirements.
Graduates within three months who meet the requirements may be accepted for examination; submit official transcript and a letter from the department head or registrar verifying enrollment, expected graduation date, and major.
Driver’s License – Some positions require possession of a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
