SUMMARY OF DUTIESUnder the supervision of the Shelter Manager or Program Supervisor, the Shelter Services Advocate is responsible for promoting an environment that provides participants a sense of empowerment, improves their well‑being, and increases their ability to live safely and independently. The Advocate ensures that participants’ basic needs—food, clothing, shelter—are met and that they are safe and supported while in the shelter program.
The Advocate provides trauma‑informed engagement and services to all participants, focusing on building healthy relationships and using those relationships to empower participants and help them heal from trauma. This is an overnight position.
- High school diploma or equivalent. Additional coursework or specialized training at a community college or other formal training program. Knowledge of stenography, office routines, elementary accounting, and operation of bookkeeping and billing machines, transcribing, and tabulating equipment is required.
- At least one year up to two years of experience.
- Minimum a high school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of work experience in the domestic violence field or with a related target group and children.
- Two (2) years of work experience preferred. For those not meeting the experience requirement, at least six months in the domestic violence field or with a related target group and completion of:
- Initial training
- 80 hours of shadowing a qualified staff member in the same position
- 40 hours of being shadowed by a qualified staff member in the same position
- Enhanced six‑month training and close supervision plan submitted to DHS/SSD Designee within the first week of employment.
- Knowledge of domestic violence dynamics and trauma‑informed care highly desired.
- Ability to engage, empower, and communicate effectively, respectfully, and empathetically with survivors from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives.
- Ability to work evenings, overnight, and weekends.
- Capability to work independently and with minimal supervision; at some shifts the advocate is the only staff member on duty.
- A valid Hawaii driver’s license and a clear driver’s abstract are required. Travel in a personal vehicle may be needed throughout the island.
- Position subject to criminal background investigation; continued employment contingent on a clean record.
- Completion of CPR, CPI, and/or van driving training is required for safe operation.
- Completion of CPI classes or other behavioral management certification as mandated by contract.
- Completion of First Aid classes.
- Requires contacts both inside and outside the organization to provide participant services. Normal courtesy, tact, and discretion required.
