Salary: $4,388.00 to $5,555.00 per month (SR-16, Steps C - I). Salary includes shortage category differential.
Shift work: Applicants must be willing and able to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
The Airport Operations Controller III is the senior controller on a shift at Honolulu International Airport (HNL). The role includes independent performance of aircraft ground operations control work and directs the work of one or more lower‑level Airport Operations Controllers assigned to the shift. The position is supervised by the Airport Operations Control Unit Supervisor II and is required to uphold standard operating procedures.
In the supervisor’s absence, the controller may represent the supervisor at meetings, conduct inspections, and coordinate escorts as assigned.
Responsibilities:
- Assign gate positions and terminal holding rooms to air carriers for arriving and/or departing aircraft.
- Assign aircraft to storage areas for engine testing and layovers.
- Coordinate movement of aircraft in emergency situations; notify air carriers of over‑parking and require aircraft removal.
- Receive and relay information and instructions by radio communication.
- Patrol operational areas to monitor ground operations and traffic movements.
- Inspect runways, taxiways, ramps, and other areas for obstructions, damage, and hazardous conditions; report or take immediate action to correct such conditions.
- Enforce safety regulations; escort or direct authorized personnel on the ramp or aircraft operating areas.
- Issue notices and citations as necessary; tabulate aircraft revenue landings.
- Assign and review the work of assigned lower‑level personnel.
- Participate in providing on‑the‑job training and airfield procedures orientation for new employees.
- Assure proper conduct of operations on the shift and handle emergency and unusual situations; prepare reports and keep records.
Qualifications:
General
Experience:
Two (2) years of work experience demonstrating the following abilities:
- Meet and deal effectively with people.
- Understand and apply various rules and regulations.
- Prepare reports.
- Act effectively in emergencies.
Specialized
Experience:
Two (2) years of work experience in airport ground operations control work that includes:
- Assignment and control of aircraft parking positions.
- Direction and control of the movement of aircraft and vehicles on the ramp.
- Inspection of runways and airfields and aircraft parking ramps.
- Enforcement of aircraft and vehicular operational rules and regulations.
For the Airport Operations Controller III and Airport Operations Control Unit Supervisor I classes, at least one (1) year of the Specialized Experience required must have been comparable to the class Airport Operations Controller II.
Driver’s License: Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license to drive in the State of Hawaii at the time of appointment.
Security Identification Area (SIDA) Clearance – Federal Criminal History Records Check: Applicants for positions requiring unescorted access to secured airport areas must undergo a fingerprint‑based criminal history record check. Successful clearance requires no convictions or findings of “not guilty by reason of insanity” for disqualifying offenses within ten years of application.
