The Learning Specialist/Special Education Teaching position is for the Therapeutic Learning Center at May Street Elementary, a self‑contained setting, instructing students with social, emotional and behavioral issues.
Job Purpose Statement: The job of “Teacher
- Special Education” is to facilitate Special Education student success in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living through implementing district‑approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress, outcomes; addressing specific needs; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; maintaining IEP; and providing feedback to students, parents, and administration.
- Adapts lessons for the purpose of implementing the IEP goals and meeting the special needs of students.
- Evaluates student’s abilities and performance for establishing eligibility under IDEA and Section 504, setting educational goals, determining placement and evaluating progress.
- Collaborates with school personnel, agencies and community agencies to develop and modify the program to maximize student outcomes.
- Develops and maintains Individualized Education Plans (IEP) on each student served for compliance with IDEA and state regulations.
- Directs instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides to provide an effective school program and address individual needs.
- Instructs students with individualized special needs to develop appropriate academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
- Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Maintains consistent and predictable attendance to meet district requirements and position needs.
- Convenes, chairs and documents the activity of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), IEP team and Placement Team to provide a free, appropriate public education and maintain compliance with IDEA and state regulations.
- Creates and maintains student special education files to maintain compliance with IDEA and state regulations.
- Prepares teaching materials and reports to implement lesson plans and document teacher and student progress.
- Reports incidents to maintain personal safety of students, provide a positive learning environment and follow district and/or school policies.
- Administers medication, first aid, personal hygiene and/or health care requirements as may be required to care for medical conditions of students.
- Assists other personnel as required to support completion of work activities.
- Participates in various meetings for receiving and/or providing information and meeting credential requirements.
- Updates knowledge as needed by participating in in‑services and staff development offerings.
- Other related duties as directed.
- Qualifications Experience Required
- Experience working with students with special needs in an MTSS/special education setting.
- Training and experience working with IEPs and behavior plans.
- Prior school level special education experience preferred.
- Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred.
- Skills to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance, address student health care needs.
- Knowledge of special education disabilities, age‑appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework.
- Abilities to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform specialized tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative relationships.
- Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred.
Oregon Teaching License with a Special Education endorsement.
The successful candidate will need to pass a post‑offer, pre‑employment drug test and physical abilities assessment.
Valid Oregon Teaching License with a Special Education endorsement required.
