Job Title: Ophthalmic Technician

An ophthalmic technician is a valuable asset to an ophthalmologist, assisting in providing excellent patient care during visits. This role performs a range of duties and uses equipment to conduct initial testing to prepare a patient for an exam.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Display a professional attitude, greet patients promptly with a smile, and thank them when they leave
- Anticipate physician needs to facilitate clinic flow
- Practice urgency regarding patient and doctor time and schedules
- Comply with all company policies and HIPAA
- Verify patient information by interviewing the patient
- Record patient medical history and current medications and confirm purpose of visit
- Record all data in the patient’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
- Check condition of patient’s eyes by observing pupils, muscles, visual acuity, and extraocular movements
- Required skills include dilation, refraction, pressures, and various diagnostic tests (visual fields, OCT, GDX, IOL Master, autorefractor, topography)
- Demonstrate knowledge of eye anatomy, diseases, symptoms and ocular medications
- Document medical visits and procedures as performed by the physician
- Prepare patients for treatments and minor procedures; measure and record vital signs as required
- Open and close exam rooms as needed
- Keep examination, treatment, laser and other rooms clean and stocked; maintain drug counts
- Provide excellent patient care with energy and empathy
- HIPAA confidentiality standards compliance
- Strong communication and teamwork across all levels of staff
- Organizational skills focused on tracking patient care and improving flow
- Desire to gain industry knowledge and training
- Initiative in accomplishing practice goals; ability to grow, adapt, and accept change
- Positive, team-oriented, patient-focused work attitude
- Commitment to work over 40 hours to meet business needs
- Reliable transportation to travel to multiple locations with minimal notice
- Minimum:
High school diploma or GED required - Minimum:
One year of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Current COA or COT certification is preferred but not required
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems
- Computer proficiency and ability to quickly learn new applications
- Varies; frequent walking, standing, and sitting with occasional bending, stooping, and reaching
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 lbs
- Fine motor skills and full use of hands; constant use of writing/typing and technology
- Visual and auditory acuity, depth perception, color vision, and ability to focus
- Occasional driving or climbing may be necessary
