Job DescriptionQUALIFICATIONS
The JROTC Instructor must meet all eligibility requirements established by the appropriate branch of the United States Armed Forces for Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) instructors and maintain current certification throughout employment. The position requires successful completion of all background checks as required by the school division and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with high school students, school administrators, faculty, parents, and community partners.
Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and mentoring skills are required. Knowledge of adolescent development, classroom management, and instructional practices is preferred. The instructor must be able to model professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct consistent with both military and school division standards.
DESCRIPTION
The JROTC Instructor is responsible for planning, delivering, and managing the high school’s JROTC program in accordance with U.S. Department of Defense regulations, service-specific JROTC directives, school board policies, and district procedures. The instructor provides leadership and instruction that promote citizenship, character development, leadership skills, personal responsibility, and academic achievement. The JROTC Instructor supports the overall mission of the school by fostering a positive, inclusive learning environment and by encouraging student engagement, discipline, and respect.
GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)
- Plan and deliver JROTC curriculum aligned with service branch requirements and school division instructional expectations.
- Instruct students in leadership development, citizenship, character education, teamwork, and personal responsibility.
- Maintain compliance with all Department of Defense, service-specific JROTC regulations, and school division policies.
- Establish and maintain a safe, orderly, and respectful classroom and training environment.
- Supervise cadets during classroom instruction, physical training, drills, ceremonies, field trips, competitions, and other JROTC-related activities.
- Manage JROTC program records, equipment, uniforms, inventories, and accountability requirements.
- Evaluate student performance and maintain accurate grading, attendance, and participation records in accordance with school procedures.
- Collaborate with school administrators, counselors, teachers, and parents to support student success.
- Promote and model high standards of conduct, appearance, and professionalism.
- Organize and oversee extracurricular JROTC activities, including leadership teams, community service projects, and ceremonial events.
- Participate in required professional development, inspections, and training as mandated by the sponsoring military branch.
- Support school and division initiatives, events, and activities as appropriate.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the school administration.
SUPERVISION
The JROTC Instructor works under the general supervision of the School Principal or designee and receives programmatic guidance from the appropriate military service branch JROTC headquarters.
WORK CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a classroom, gymnasium, outdoor training areas, and community settings. The position may require standing, walking, physical activity, and the ability to demonstrate drills and exercises. Duties may include evening or weekend hours for extracurricular activities, competitions, ceremonies, and community events. The instructor may be required to travel locally or regionally in support of JROTC activities. Work is conducted in accordance with school division calendars and program schedules.
