Elementary Music Teacher

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music Education or a related field. They must also possess, or be eligible to obtain, a Virginia Teaching License with the appropriate endorsement(s) for the assigned area. Prior experience teaching music at the elementary level is preferred, as is proficiency in playing and teaching a variety of musical instruments. Applicants should demonstrate strong classroom management and communication skills, along with a passion for inspiring a love of music and creativity in young learners.

A commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment is essential, as is familiarity with educational technology tools that enhance music instruction.

The Elementary Music Teacher is a creative and passionate educator responsible for cultivating an appreciation for music among elementary school students. This role involves designing engaging lessons, introducing fundamental musical concepts, and fostering a positive and inclusive environment that encourages students to explore and express themselves through music.

General Duties (May not include all duties performed):

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive music curriculum that aligns with national and state standards, catering to the developmental needs of elementary students.
  • Provide instruction in basic vocal techniques and introduce students to a variety of musical instruments, fostering a well-rounded understanding of music.
  • Encourage students to express themselves through music by incorporating creative activities such as singing, dancing, and playing instruments.
  • Organize and rehearse musical performances, including concerts, recitals, and school productions, to showcase students' musical talents.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere that celebrates diversity and encourages students of all abilities and backgrounds to participate in musical activities.
  • Incorporate technology and multimedia tools to enhance music education, exposing students to a variety of musical genres and styles.
  • Work collaboratively with other educators, including classroom teachers and administrators, to integrate music into interdisciplinary projects and reinforce learning across subjects.
  • Maintain open communication with parents through regular updates, newsletters, and opportunities for family involvement in musical events.
  • Foster an appreciation for different musical genres, cultures, and historical periods, helping students develop a well-rounded understanding of the art of music.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.

The employee reports directly to the School Principal and other designated administrators.

Duties performed are typically in the school setting. Performs professional work providing support and consultative services for assigned department/program. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, and light lifting. Some assignments are subject to deadlines inherent in tailoring and delivering programs to meet the needs of diverse groups. Some assignments may involve exposure to risks associated with interactions with parents and students in heightened emotional states.

Employees may be required to perform emergency and non-emergency health-related services for students as needed.

Contract Length: 200 days

The salary applies to candidates who are properly licensed and endorsed in the areas for which they teach.

Associate Teachers serve in full teaching roles while receiving support and guidance as they work toward licensure. The Associate Teacher salary for 2026-27 is approximately $49,231.
