Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree in English, Education, or a related field.

Must hold, or be eligible to hold, a Virginia Teaching License with specific endorsement(s) in the area to which assigned.

Prior experience teaching English to middle school students is preferred.

Strong knowledge of English language arts curriculum and instructional strategies.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Passion for fostering an appreciation and understanding of literature and language in young learners.

Strong classroom management and communication skills.

Commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Familiarity with educational technology tools for English Language Arts instruction.

Position Description

The Middle School English Language Arts Teacher is a dedicated and dynamic educator responsible for inspiring an appreciation for literature, language, and effective communication in middle school students. This role involves creating engaging lessons, fostering critical thinking skills, and cultivating a positive and inclusive learning environment.

General Duties
  • Develop lessons and implement a comprehensive English curriculum that aligns with state standards, emphasizing reading comprehension, writing skills, grammar, and literary analysis.
  • Deliver engaging and student-centered lessons that cater to diverse learning styles, promoting active participation and a deep understanding of the English language.
  • Introduce students to a variety of literary genres, authors, and cultures, fostering a love for reading and critical analysis of texts.
  • Guide students in the development of effective writing skills, including essay composition, creative writing, and research projects.
  • Integrate language arts components, such as vocabulary building and grammar, seamlessly into the curriculum to enhance overall language proficiency.
  • Provide one-on-one assistance and differentiated instruction to address the diverse academic needs of students, ensuring each student can achieve their full potential.
  • Design and administer assessments to measure student progress and comprehension, providing constructive feedback to support ongoing development.
  • Incorporate technology tools and resources to enhance instruction, encourage digital literacy, and engage students in interactive learning experiences.
  • Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes respect, collaboration, and a passion for learning.
  • Maintain regular communication with parents regarding student progress, upcoming assignments, and opportunities for parent involvement in their child's education.
  • Perform other related work as assigned.
Supervision

Employee reports directly to the School Principal.

Work Conditions

Duties performed are typically in the school setting. The role may involve frequent standing, sitting, walking, and light lifting. Some assignments are subject to deadlines associated with tailoring and delivering programs to meet the needs of diverse groups. Some assignments may involve exposure to risks associated with interactions with parents and students in heightened emotional states. Employees may be required to perform emergency and non-emergency health-related services for students as needed.
