The ideal candidate will hold a valid Virginia teaching license and have a minimum of three years of successful classroom teaching experience. A bachelor's degree is required, and enrollment in or completion of a Master's degree or post-Master's certificate in Administration & Supervision from an accredited institution is preferred. Experience working with alternative education settings and non-traditional learners, along with knowledge of restorative practices and behavior intervention strategies, is strongly encouraged.

Candidates should demonstrate strong instructional leadership, effective classroom management, collaborative problem-solving, and excellent organizational and communication skills. Familiarity with student discipline procedures, attendance laws, and school division policies is essential.

The Dean of Programs at New Hope Academy plays a pivotal leadership role in advancing student achievement, engagement, and behavioral support—particularly for non-traditional learners. This role also consists of student supervision, program leadership, and oversight of the New Direction Night School. The Dean of Programs serves as a liaison among students, families, staff, and community partners, while supporting the school's broader mission of equity and educational opportunity.

The position also assumes school-wide administrative responsibilities in the absence of the principal and contributes to a safe, supportive learning environment across both day and evening programs.

General Duties
  • Lead the planning, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of behavioral, intervention, alternative education, and student support programs.
  • Coordinate initiatives that promote student achievement, graduation readiness, career development, attendance, engagement, and individualized student success.
  • Monitor program effectiveness through data analysis, strategic planning, and continuous school improvement while ensuring compliance with division, state, and federal requirements.
  • Foster collaborative partnerships with staff, families, community organizations, and postsecondary institutions while overseeing the New Direction Night School Program.
  • Monitor student behavior during the school day and night school hours.
  • Support the implementation of restorative practices and positive behavior interventions.
  • Collaborate with families and student services to resolve behavior and attendance concerns.
  • Maintain accurate discipline and attendance documentation.
  • Manage evening academic operations, including student supervision and staff oversight.
  • Ensure a structured and respectful learning environment.
  • Communicate with families and staff regarding student progress and concerns.
  • Act as building administrator in the absence of the principal.
  • Prepare behavior and attendance reports and analyze data to inform school practices.
  • Supervise dismissal, transitions, after-school activities, and school wide routines.
  • Support school safety, conduct investigations, and administer discipline as needed.
  • Participate in leadership team meetings, student support conferences, and parent outreach.
  • Serve as a liaison among staff, families, and external partners.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with businesses, community agencies, and organizations to expand student internships, career exploration, workplace readiness, and work-based learning opportunities.
  • Coordinate and monitor student transition plans between New Hope Academy and home schools to support successful academic, behavioral, and social reintegration.
  • Support planning and implementation of school events and student recognition programs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

This position is supervised by the Principal of New Hope Academy. The Dean of Programs may also supervise classroom teachers, instructional assistants, custodial staff, night school staff, or other support staff during assigned duties, including the evening program.

The Dean of Programs works in both standard school environments and evening instructional settings. The role requires flexibility, including late afternoon and evening hours Monday through Thursday (11:30 AM–7:30 PM), and standard daytime hours on Friday. Occasional weekend or evening work may be required for school events or family engagement. The position involves frequent interaction with students, families, and staff and may require walking, standing, or supervising in various indoor and outdoor locations throughout the school day.
