Performs skilled technical work conducting a variety of chemical and biological analyses of wastewater, sludge, and ash to determine pollutant characteristics and concentrations for the Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under moderate supervision.
Responsibilities- Observes the collection of and takes wastewater samples as assigned in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- Performs standard field chemical and biological tests such as pH, DO, TSS, ATP, COD, PO4, etc.
- Operates, calibrates, and maintains laboratory equipment and instrumentation for optimum performance and precise analysis.
- Performs wastewater analyses in accordance with standard operating procedures, analytical methodology, quality control parameters, and laboratory certification requirements.
- Prepares and maintains equipment daily log sheets and bench sheets such as sample collection, equipment calibration, test results documentation, etc.
- Maintains inventory of chemicals and notifies staff when supplies are low.
- Cleans and maintains equipment, glassware, instrumentation, and work area in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- Serves as backup to the Sample Technician; performs duties as required.
- May be required to work outside normal work hours in on‑call and emergency situations.
- Performs special projects and other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary and appropriate.
- Associates/Technical degree with coursework in chemistry, biology, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Obtain 20 hours of laboratory related (ex. DEQ classes, VWEA workshops and conferences, DCLS classes, LAVA workshops, etc.), City, and Safety training.
- Some knowledge of wastewater laboratory principles, procedures, techniques, and related equipment.
- Some knowledge of Quality Assurance principles.
- Some knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements related to position.
- Some knowledge of wastewater monitoring, instrumentation, and related software.
- Some knowledge of basic laboratory equipment use and techniques.
- Quantitative, research, and analytical skills.
- Clear and concise oral and written communication skills.
- Basic computer skills to include Microsoft Office applications, LIMS sample login, and processing.
- Troubleshooting, time management, and organization skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment as well as self-directed environment.
- Ability to analyze and evaluate numerical data.
- Ability to pass proficiency tests as established by Federal and State Regulations (required).
Work is primarily performed indoors but is exposed to temperature changes (warehouses, covered loading docks, garages, etc.) or extreme noise, odors, heights, dust, fumes, or hazardous materials. Occasional outdoor work is required during all types of weather conditions.
Essential Physical Activities- Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception, typing, sitting, and driving.
