Performs complex skilled technical work determining necessary process adjustments to maintain compliance with local, State, and Federal regulations, conducting plant inspections, purchasing parts and equipment, determining compliance maintenance priorities, designing plant process equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under general direction. Supervision is exercised over assigned staff.
Responsibilities- Performs daily plant status inspections to ensure that process is operating properly.
- Serves as consultant within and outside the department to help identify and solve operational and mechanical problems.
- Makes process decisions and establishes protocols to ensure plant compliance with regulations and efficiency that follows directives established by the Operations and Maintenance Manager.
- Analyzes plant performance data and advises Operations and Maintenance Manager of identified problems and necessary process changes to ensure continued compliance.
- Performs microscopic examinations of plant biomass to determine what, if any, process adjustments should be made.
- Participates in maintenance scheduling to finalize priority of work orders, optimize downtime windows, and provide necessary lead times.
- Oversees proper operation of various plant support equipment such as cooling tower, Pro Minent ORP disinfection controller, CEM microwave, portable hydryocarbon detector, S-can process probe, and other general laboratory equipment.
- Ensures that necessary permit compliance reports are accurate and completed.
- Coordinates inventory tracking and purchases with Plant Maintenance Superintendent.
- Maintains plant SCADA system and ensures its continuous operation; provides 24/7 support to plant staff regarding SCADA.
- Works with vendors to locate parts and materials.
- Identifies potential contractors; work with contractors to plan upcoming work and projects to keep plant equipment operational.
- Attends design and project meetings to provide input and aid in decisions regarding future plant equipment and design.
- Supervises assigned personnel; assists with the recruitment and selection of staff; assigns, directs, trains and inspects the work of personnel; coaches, counsels, disciplines, and evaluates staff performance; develops staff schedules.
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, biology, chemistry, engineering, or related field and considerable experience in wastewater treatment plant processes, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Class I Wastewater Works Operator license.
- Obtain Forklift Operator and Method 9 Emissions Evaluator certifications within six months of hire.
- Obtain Sewage Sludge Incineration certification within one year of hire.
- Thorough knowledge of modern wastewater treatment practices, techniques, as well as of related equipment and computer software and applications pertaining to maintenance.
- Thorough knowledge of Quality Control principles, laboratory techniques and of local, state and federal regulations governing wastewater treatment operations.
- Knowledge of modern operational & maintenance software and computer applications.
- Strong analytical, quantitative, strategic thinking, oral & written communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to influence and work with others on complex technical issues.
- Work is primarily performed indoors but worker may be exposed to temperamental changes (treatment plant outside environment, warehouses, covered loading docks, garages, etc) or extreme noise, odors, heights and/or dust.
