Job Description

U.S. Bank is seeking an Application Developer with design and development experience to contribute toward the success of our technology initiatives. The successful candidate will join a team of developers responsible for maintaining and enhancing U.S. Bank’s Customer Information System (CIS) as well as the Hogan Online Delivery System (ODS) & Hogan Platform Automation Support (PAS) System. The candidate will work closely with business partners to develop requirements, designs, and write technical specifications, designing or redesigning complex mainframe processes within the Hogan CIS, ODS & PAS platforms and at times collaborate with other application development teams while simultaneously maintaining quality, security, and compliance.

Responsibilities
  • Write production‑ready code that is easily testable, easily understood by other developers, and accounts for edge cases and errors.
  • Design code and services/APIs in accordance with agreed best practices and standards, ensuring consistency with the overall architecture.
  • Use systematic debugging to diagnose issues within a single service and cross‑service issues, employing a range of tools to detect incidents and raise them with stakeholders in a timely manner.
  • Take ownership of incidents within your domain and participate in their resolution or assistance to others.
  • Select appropriate data structures and algorithms, understanding their complexities and suggesting improvements.
  • Create reasonable‑sized code reviews that describe changes, testing performed, and assess other reviews for quality, value, business logic, test coverage, and architecture alignment.
  • Identify and resolve open code reviews promptly.
  • Understand your team’s testing approach, use quality metrics to identify gaps, and recommend solutions that align with accepted testing frameworks and the testing pyramid.
  • Approach engineering work with a security lens, actively looking for vulnerabilities in code and during code reviews.
  • Maintain a holistic view of how applications across multiple contexts integrate with each other and be skilled with monitoring tools to tune and adjust monitoring within the team.
  • Develop effective coaching strategies for individuals, seek out mentoring opportunities, and advocate for others to grow their technical understanding.
  • Actively participate in Scrum, developing a clear understanding of an effective software delivery process, reviewing tasks critically, prioritizing and sizing them for continuous integration and incremental delivery.
  • Anticipate and communicate blockers and delays before escalation is required.
  • Create project proposals and designs that have considerable impact, consider dependencies, failure states, maintainability, testability, scalability, reliability, performance, and align with business context.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience.
  • Five to six years of relevant experience.
  • Hands‑on mainframe development experience with Hogan COBOL, JCL, CICS, JSON, Splunk, IMS Database, Git Lab, IDz/RDz (IBM Developer for z/OS), Jira.
  • Strong experience with application maintenance, design, architecture & system testing.
  • Experience in system development life cycle, IT standards, procedures, and policies.
  • Demonstrated experience in effective cross‑team interaction and collaboration, with both technical and business partner teams.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated problem‑solving experience.
Additional Information
  • This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
  • The role offers a hybrid/flexible schedule: 3 or more days per week in office, with flexibility to work outside the office for the other days.
