The Hospitalist Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides direct medical care to patients requiring hospitalization. They chart medical history, assess health status, diagnose potential issues, and work with physicians and other health professionals to provide high-quality care. They are in charge of accurately filling out the patient’s chart and keeping it up to date as diagnoses and evaluations continue. The NP also orders tests, collects data regarding the patient’s status, and communicates with patients’ family members as needed.
Additionally, these professionals communicate regularly with the physician(s) and other members of the health care team to discuss status updates for patients.
- Performs evaluation and problem identification of patients.
- Performs history and physical examination of patients.
- Writes prescriptions, orders and interprets laboratory data and radiological tests.
- Monitors patient status and response to treatments.
- Documents findings in the medical record.
- Recommends appropriate therapeutic interventions.
- Provides education and counseling for patients. Directs patient and/or family to agencies dealing with specific illnesses/diseases.
- Orders appropriate therapeutic interventions.
- Performs procedures for which practitioner is credentialed as dictated by patient need.
- Interacts with nursing staff.
- Participates in daily team rounding, periodic M&M sessions and department conferences/teaching opportunities.
- Participates in Departmental quality assurance, risk management, and compliance efforts.
- Valid KY Nursing License.
- Approved National Certification recognized by the KY Board.
- BLS and ACLS.
- Capable of managing multiple tasks and high work level capacity.
- Provides a positive and professional representation of the organization.
- Proven interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians and other health care team members.
- Promotes culture of safety for patients and employees through proper identification, reporting, documentation, and prevention.
- Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments in related scope of job role or practice.
- Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities.
- Self‑directed, with sound decision making, written and verbal communication skills.
- Able to maintain confidentiality and abide by all HIPAA regulations.
- Participates in ongoing patient experience improvement activities.
- Demonstrates excellent customer service through his/her attitude and actions, consistent with the standards contained in the Mission, Vision, and Values of the organization.
- Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, and local requirements, and TJC standards and/or standards from other accrediting bodies.
- Minimum work experience:
At least 1 year NP experience preferred.
