The English / AP English Teacher provides high-quality instruction that promotes student growth in reading, writing, speaking, listening, literary analysis, and critical thinking skills. This position is responsible for creating engaging and inclusive learning environments where all students are held to high expectations and supported in taking intellectual risks.

The English / AP English Teacher cultivates a strong sense of belonging for every learner, ensuring each student feels seen, valued, and capable, while guiding students through productive struggle as an essential pathway to deep learning and growth. The teacher provides instruction across English Language Arts courses, including Advanced Placement (AP) English as assigned, with an emphasis on rigorous analysis, evidence-based reasoning, academic writing, discussion, and preparation for postsecondary success.

• Creates a safe, welcoming, and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel a strong sense of belonging and are empowered to take academic risks without fear of failure.

• Encourages students to pursue challenging coursework, including AP English, and supports them in developing the confidence and skills necessary for success.

• Develops engaging and standards-aligned lessons that promote active learning, student achievement, and a love of reading, writing, and learning.
• Inspires students to become confident readers, writers, speakers, listeners, and critical thinkers who believe in their own capacity to achieve at high levels.
• Teaches AP English courses with appropriate college-level rigor, including advanced reading, analysis, writing, argumentation, synthesis, and evidence-based reasoning.
• Prepares AP English students for the expectations and assessments associated with the applicable College Board Advanced Placement course.
• Normalizes productive struggle in the classroom, teaching students that grappling with challenging content is a sign of growth, not failure, and celebrates intellectual persistence.
• Uses formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress, maintain rigor, and provide timely, actionable feedback that moves learning forward.
• Maintains high expectations for student learning, behavior, and participation, ensuring every student feels challenged and supported.
• Creates opportunities for collaboration, discussion, inquiry, debate, close reading, writing, and authentic learning experiences.
• Encourages students to engage deeply with complex texts, ideas, perspectives, and issues.

• Designs and delivers differentiated instruction to meet the diverse academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students.
• Embraces productive struggle as a core instructional strategy, scaffolding challenging tasks so students develop resilience, persistence, and the confidence to work through difficulty.
• Utilizes a variety of instructional strategies, interventions, and assessments that challenge students at the appropriate level of rigor while providing support for growth.
• Adjusts instruction to support students in progressing from grade-level ELA coursework to advanced and AP-level expectations.
• Provides appropriate scaffolding and support while maintaining the academic rigor expected in AP English coursework.
