The Senior Account / Project Accountant is responsible for the financial oversight, reporting, and performance management of large-scale Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) construction projects. This role partners closely with Project Managers, Operations Leadership, and Executive Management to ensure financial accuracy, cost control, contract compliance, and overall project profitability.
This position plays a critical role in supporting complex, multi-million-dollar projects and requires strong construction accounting expertise, analytical capability, and proactive financial leadership.
Key ResponsibilitiesProject Financial Management
- Manage full-cycle accounting for large, complex MEP projects.
- Monitor project budgets, forecasts, cost reports, and profitability projections.
- Prepare and maintain Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.
- Analyze job cost reports and identify cost overruns, risks, and margin erosion.
- Support revenue recognition in accordance with percentage-of-completion (POC) or applicable accounting standards.
- Review and validate project setup in ERP/accounting system.
Billing & Contract Administration
- Prepare and review monthly progress billings (AIA and non-AIA).
- Track change orders, subcontractor commitments, and contract modifications.
- Ensure proper documentation and compliance with contract terms.
- Monitor accounts receivable, retention, and collections in coordination with Project Managers.
- Review subcontractor pay applications and lien waivers.
Forecasting & Financial Reporting
- Partner with Project Managers to develop and update monthly forecasts.
- Provide financial analysis to support decision-making and risk mitigation.
- Prepare financial reporting packages for leadership.
- Assist with cash flow forecasting at the project level.
- Support year-end audits and internal financial reviews.
Cost Control & Risk Management
- Monitor labor productivity, material costs, subcontractor commitments, and indirect costs.
- Identify financial exposure and assist in mitigation planning.
- Review project contingencies and assist in managing project margins.
- Ensure compliance with company financial controls and policies.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Serve as financial advisor to Project Managers and Operations teams.
- Mentor junior project accountants or accounting staff.
- Collaborate with procurement, payroll, and corporate accounting teams.
- Support process improvements within project accounting systems and workflows.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- 5–10+ years of construction or project accounting experience required.
- Experience with large-scale commercial or industrial MEP projects preferred.
- Strong understanding of construction contracts and job cost accounting.
- Experience with percentage-of-completion accounting required.
- ERP experience (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, CMiC, Spectrum, or similar) preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong analytical and financial modeling skills.
- Advanced Excel proficiency.
- Deep understanding of construction billing processes (AIA, lien waivers, retention, etc.).
- Ability to interpret contracts and change orders.
- Strong communication skills with ability to partner with non-financial stakeholders.
- High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple large projects simultaneously.
