Job Description Summary
Location:
Genesis Cancer and Blood Institute. Pay: $26.54 – $49.29 per hour. Answers incoming phone calls regarding patients. Consults with the Head Nurse and/or physician to present the patient’s problem, resolve the issue, or direct calls to the appropriate person.
- Answers calls from patients and home‑health agencies, using nursing assessment skills to determine the nature of each call, its urgency, and how to resolve the question/problem or whom to direct the call.
- Keeps daily logs of incoming calls and charts decisions made regarding the calls.
- Pulls a patient’s chart to accompany messages for nurses and doctors.
- Discusses with physicians and/or nurse practitioners the steps necessary to ensure proper patient care.
- Discusses abnormal labs or tests presented by other staff members with physicians so that appropriate action and charting can be completed, if necessary.
- Handles hospice and home‑health agency questions regarding patients and documents physicians’ decisions.
- Contacts the emergency department when a patient is directed there, gives an explanation, diagnosis, and a phone number where physicians can be contacted.
- Handles prescription refill requests according to company procedure.
- Is expected to work at any company location to help meet business needs and to work overtime when given sufficient notice.
- Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
- Registered Nurse degree.
- RN license in state of employment.
- Current CPR and BLS certifications.
- Valid driver’s license and vehicle for travel to other clinic locations, as needed.
- Experience with hematology/oncology patients in a clinic or hospital setting.
- Analytical and critical‑thinking skills, including solid problem‑solving, analysis, decision‑making, planning, time management and organizational skills; detail‑oriented with independent judgment.
- Interpersonal effectiveness: interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, diplomacy, tact, conflict management, delegation, and diversity awareness; ability to handle sensitive and confidential material.
- Communication skills: good command of the English language; second language an asset. Effective oral, written and presentation communication, active listening, and balanced feedback.
- Customer‑service and organizational awareness: strong customer focus; ability to build a culture of quality and performance excellence; collaboration and partnerships; positive employee, physician, and community relations.
- Self‑management: manages own time, conflicting priorities, stress, and professional development; self‑motivated, works independently with limited supervision, and can work remotely effectively as required.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, multi‑site environment with competing priorities and stakeholders.
- Computer skills: proficiency in MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and EMR.
