Summary

These positions are located at Hot Springs National Park. The primary purpose is to perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties. Incumbent utilizes journeyman to master level knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts.

Duties

The primary function of these positions is the oversight and maintenance of all park HVAC systems to ensure property operation.

  • Perform simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment, and related utilities, particularly electrical and plumbing.
  • Assist other maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.
  • Perform minor carpentry repairs using hand tools (e.g., replacing broken planks on picnic tables, broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replacing hinges, latches, and catches).
  • Perform minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects where appearances are not critical (e.g., staining picnic tables and trash barrels).
  • Operate a light truck to pick up supplies and transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work.
  • Make minor repairs as needed and refer problems to higher graded workers.
  • Operate a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment.

Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Direct Deposit:
    Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Driver’s License:
    May be required to operate a motor vehicle as part of duties. Must maintain a valid State‑issued driver’s license and submit copies as required.
  • Uniform:
    Required to wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Minimum Age Restrictions:
    Applicants must meet one of the following:
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be at least 16 years old and: (a) have graduated from high school or obtained an equivalent certificate; (b) have completed a formal vocational training program; (c) have received a statement from school authorities supporting employment over continuing education; or (d) be currently enrolled in a secondary school and work only during vacation periods or part‑time under a formal student employment program.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job‑related factors:

  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (screen out).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  • Knowledge of materials.
  • Knowledge of technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  • Use of measuring instruments.
Screen Out

Minimum qualifications:

Perform most of the work as a Maintenance Mechanic at the journeyman level with a high level of independence in at least two of the following trades:
Masonry, Electrical, Plumbing, Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic, Utilities Systems Repair‑Operator, and/or Engineering Equipment Operator.

If your knowledge and ability in the screen out factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.
