The Accounting Assistant acts as a paraprofessional to accounting and fiscal professionals by performing assigned accounting practices to assist with fundamental accounting and routine fiscal procedures.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:Experience in Accounts Payable transaction processing.
The applicant must have an understanding of accounting principles and is able to analyze, evaluate, and process invoices from receipt through payment. This requires an understanding of both accounting theory and practice. Knowledge of project costing is a plus.
Experience in long-term care or related healthcare fields and an understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans Affair programs, and private healthcare insurance billing practices is preferred but not required. Excellent communication and customer service skills are required. The candidate must have the ability to work in a team environment assisting elderly residents and their families in a long-term care facility with their financial questions and assist with managing their finances.
The candidate will also work with other agencies in gathering, analyzing, and reporting financial data to the Business Office for new resident admissions. Attention to detail, excellent documentation capabilities, and organization skills are highly desired.

- clarify any questionable invoice items, prices or receiving signatures;
- assemble and review invoices to be completed for payment;
- maintain copies of vouchers, invoices, and other correspondence;
- practice effective monitoring to ensure payments are made to vendors in a timely manner.
- follow written directions such as code books, chart of accounts, and purchasing manuals;
- review documents as to protect against unintentional over payment;
- post business transactions, process invoices, verify financial data to maintain accounts payable records;
- use a calculator and computer;
- learn applicable accounting software;
- prioritize and meet established deadlines;
- maintain financial records and prepare financial reports;
- compare information and recognize discrepancies;
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with residents and their families, vendors, departmental officials, co-workers, and the public.
This position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
