Certified Nurse Aide

Job Summary

The Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) is responsible for assisting patients with activities of daily living and providing basic nursing care under the direct supervision of licensed nurses. The role involves supporting patient hygiene, nutrition, mobility, and safety while maintaining a clean and safe environment. The CNA collaborates with the healthcare team to ensure quality patient care and supports various clinical and clerical duties as needed.

• Assist patients with activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, oral hygiene, and toileting while maintaining patient privacy and dignity.
• Answer call lights, serve and collect food trays, assist with feeding, and measure and record food and liquid intake and output.
• Perform routine treatments such as warm and cold applications and assist RN/LPN with more complex procedures.
• Collect specimens including stool, urine, and sputum, and take and record vital signs, weights, and heights.
• Complete EKGs per order under supervision of RN/LPN.
• Provide general nursing care such as positioning, lifting, turning, and ambulating patients, and assist with use of bedpans and commodes.
• Prepare patient rooms and units for admissions, transfers, emergencies, and discharges, ensuring cleanliness and safety.
• Care for patients in emergency settings under RN supervision and report changes in patient condition promptly.
• Maintain compliance with facility policies including fire safety, infection control, hazardous materials, and quality assurance.
• Attend required meetings, in-services, and educational programs; participate in nursing service committees as requested.
• Perform clerical duties such as answering unit phones, data entry, and coordinating equipment and supply needs.

• Certification through the South Dakota Board of Nursing as a CNA.
• Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions.
• Visual and auditory ability to observe and detect changes in patient physical and mental status.
• Effective verbal communication skills with patients, healthcare team members, visitors, and family.
• BLS-CPR Certification obtained within 60 days of hire.

• Experience working in emergency room or specialty care areas.
• Previous participation in nursing service committees or quality assurance programs.

• Must maintain confidentiality, privacy, and respect for patient dignity.
• Flexibility and reliability regarding attendance and availability for work.
• Ability to work effectively in fast-paced and potentially critical care environments such as the emergency room.
• Compliance with all safety, fire, environmental, and infection control policies.

• Work schedule may include shifts covering patient care needs; flexibility in shift assignments is required.
• May be required to work weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as per facility policy.
