Field Hydrographic Data Specialist
Position Purpose
Primarily responsible for leading and supervising hydrographic survey operations in the field and coordinating post-fieldwork data processing in the office. This position involves overseeing the field operations, ensuring the accuracy of data collection, and transcribing and analyzing data for reporting purposes for the project. The position requires leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to adapt to both field and office environments.
EssentialFunctions Field Operations
- Lead hydrographic survey missions, including pre-survey planning, on-site execution, and
- Operate and maintain hydrographic equipment, such as multibeam and single-beam echo sounders, GNSS systems, and other related tools.
- Supervise field staff, assigning tasks, providing training, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
- Perform quality control of collected data in real-time to ensure consistency and accuracy.
- Troubleshoot and resolve equipment or technical issues encountered during surveys.
- Liaise with clients, or other stakeholders to align field activities with project objectives.
- Perform work in a safe and efficient manner, adhering to firm and regulatory standards.
- Complete daily Job Safety Analysis (JSA) forms to identify and mitigate potential risks.
- Conduct daily tailgate safety meetings to discuss safety protocols and project updates.
- Monitor work conditions and responsibly use stop-work authority when necessary.
- Report incidents to the appropriate personnel and complete required incident reports promptly.
- Process and analyze hydrographic data using specialized software (e.g., Hypack, CARIS, QINSy).
- Transcribe field data into standardized formats and prepare detailed survey reports.
- Develop charts, maps, and deliverables for client presentations or regulatory compliance.
- Maintain accurate records of survey activities, including field notes, equipment logs, and data backups.
- Collaborate with project managers and technical teams to refine methodologies and improve survey efficiency.
- Hydrographic Field Staff during field operations.
While performing the duties of this job, the associate is frequently required to stand; walk long distances while carrying equipment, sometimes through rugged terrain, mud, or swamp; drive and/or ride in a boat; sit; balance, stoop, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds; use hands to operate, handle, maneuver and/or manipulate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; use manual dexterity to operate equipment;

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Associate degree from an accredited four-year college or a vocational-technical college; or bachelor’s degree in Hydrography, Geomatics, Oceanography, or a related discipline, along with 8 years of relevant experience in hydrographic surveying within the area of specialization; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency in hydrographic surveying equipment and techniques; ability to operate electronic distance measuring equipment and other surveying instruments, boats, airboats, GPS, all-terrain vehicles, and other equipment necessary to obtain survey data.
- Advanced knowledge of hydrographic data processing software.
- Familiarity with GIS applications and geospatial data management.
- Attention to detail, accuracy, and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work in challenging field conditions (e.g., remote locations, marine environments).
- Strong communication and leadership skills for team coordination.
