Director of Accounting Position Overview
The Director of Accounting will serve as the top accounting leader responsible for building structure, improving cash flow visibility, and establishing scalable financial processes across a rapidly growing, project-based industrial services organization.
This role will oversee 7+ P&Ls/entities, lead consolidation and financial reporting, and take ownership of tightening invoicing, collections, and internal controls in an environment that is currently underdeveloped and highly manual.
The ideal candidate is a hands‑on builder with deep experience in project-based accounting (construction, industrial services, oilfield services, or similar) who has successfully stepped into unstructured environments and created discipline, visibility, and accountability.
Key Responsibilities Accounting Leadership & Structure Build- Stand up and formalize the accounting function across multiple entities and divisions
- Establish standardized processes, policies, and internal controls where little structure exists today
- Lead and develop a team of accountants, providing direction, accountability, and performance management
- Serve as the primary owner of accounting operations, reporting directly to the CFO/Executive team
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close across 7+ P&Ls/entities
- Lead consolidation of financials and ensure accuracy and timeliness of reporting
- Improve visibility into division-level performance and profitability
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and readiness for audit
- Take ownership of invoicing, billing, and collections processes, identifying breakdowns and implementing improvements
- Reduce aged receivables and drive cash flow improvements through process discipline and accountability
- Partner with operations and project teams to ensure accurate, timely billing (T&M and lump sum)
- Implement structure around WIP tracking, billing cycles, and revenue recognition (ASC 606 where applicable)
- Design and implement internal controls, approval workflows, and financial governance processes
- Identify inefficiencies and implement scalable solutions across accounting operations
- Drive process standardization across divisions, particularly in high-volume project environments
- Improve data integrity and reporting accuracy across systems
- Partner closely with operations, project managers, and divisional leaders to align financial and operational performance
- Support leadership with financial insights, variance analysis, and decision-making support
- Act as a key liaison between accounting and field operations
- Stabilized and structured accounting function across all entities
- Measurable improvement in AR aging, billing timelines, and cash collections
- Clean, reliable monthly close and consolidated reporting process
- Implementation of internal controls and standardized procedures
- Increased visibility into project-level profitability and financial performance
- 8–12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roles
- Proven experience in project-based or field service industries:
- Industrial services
- Construction / EPC
- Oil & gas / energy services
- Demonstrated success in building or transforming accounting functions in unstructured environments
- Strong experience with:
- Multi-entity accounting and consolidations
- Revenue recognition (ASC 606)
- Job costing / project accounting
- High-volume invoicing and collections environments
- Strong GAAP knowledge
- Deep understanding of WIP, job costing, and project-based revenue models
- Advanced Excel skills; experience with ERP/accounting systems in multi-entity environments
- Ability to implement and improve processes without heavy system reliance
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
- CPA strongly preferred
- Hands‑on, roll‑up‑your‑sleeves leader (not purely strategic)
- Comfortable operating in fast‑paced, ambiguous, and evolving environments
- Strong accountability driver — able to push change across accounting and operations
- Effective communicator with both finance and non‑finance stakeholders
