Energy Trading Accountant

Harmer has partnered with our client in their search for an Energy Trading Accountant. This role is responsible for the month-end close process, trading transaction accounting, financial analysis, and partnering closely with front office, operations, risk management, and middle office teams to ensure accurate financial reporting.

• Account for physical commodity trading transactions, including purchases, sales, transportation, and related costs.
• Perform monthly close activities for assigned trading desks, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial analysis.
• Prepare economic-to-accounting P&L reconciliations and investigate variances.
• Review balance sheet accounts, cash activity, working capital, and other key financial metrics.
• Validate trade-related AR/AP balances and ensure completeness and accuracy of accounting records.
• Reconcile accounting data with trading systems and investigate discrepancies.
• Partner closely with Trading, Operations, Risk, and Middle Office teams to ensure accurate reporting of trading activity.
• Assist with quarterly reporting requirements, financial statement support, and management reporting.
• Support year-end audit requests and financial statement preparation.
• Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and reporting efficiency.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance (or similar)
• Commodity trading, energy, or trading desk accounting experience
• Experience supporting month-end close and financial accounting processes.
• Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
• Comfortable managing multiple priorities while meeting tight reporting deadlines.
• Collaborative mindset with the ability to build relationships across accounting and operational teams.
