US State & Local Tax Manager
The U.S. State and Local Tax Manager is responsible for managing the company's state and local income/franchise tax and sales and use tax functions. This role oversees compliance, provision support, audit management, research, planning, and process improvement across multiple jurisdictions. The position partners closely with accounting, finance, legal, procurement, IT, and business stakeholders to ensure accurate reporting, timely filings, strong internal controls, and effective management of state and local tax risk.
Key responsibilities include managing all aspects of state and local income/franchise tax compliance, overseeing state and local sales and use tax compliance, monitoring changes in state and local tax laws, supporting the annual tax provision process related to state income taxes, managing state and local tax audits, leading technical research on complex income tax and indirect tax matters, identifying and implementing opportunities to improve processes, partnering with cross-functional teams to review business changes, coordinating with external advisors and service providers, developing and maintaining state tax calendars, audit trackers, process documentation, and filing procedures, reviewing journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting work papers related to state and local tax accounts, providing guidance and mentorship to staff or shared service resources supporting state and local tax activities, and assisting with tax planning initiatives and risk assessments.
Qualifications include a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field, CPA, MST, JD, or other relevant tax credential preferred, 6+ years of progressive tax experience, strong knowledge of multistate tax concepts, experience supporting state income tax provision calculations and related accounting requirements, demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines, experience with tax research tools, ERP systems, and tax compliance software, strong analytical, organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Core competencies include technical expertise in state and local tax compliance, research, and planning, attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, strong judgment and risk awareness, ability to collaborate cross-functionally and influence business partners, continuous improvement mindset with a focus on efficiency and controls, leadership, coaching, and stakeholder management skills.
This role is ideal for a tax professional who can balance technical depth with practical business partnership and who is comfortable operating in a fast-paced, multi-jurisdictional environment.
