This role is ideal for a tax professional who can balance technical depth with practical business partnership and who is comfortable operating in a fast‑paced, multi‑jurisdictional environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage state and local tax audits, notices, and inquiries, including coordinating responses, preparing supporting schedules, and interacting with taxing authorities.
  • Lead technical research on complex income tax and indirect tax matters such as nexus, apportionment, sourcing, taxability, exemptions, voluntary disclosures, and refund opportunities.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve processes, automate workflows, enhance controls, and reduce tax exposure and compliance burden.
  • Partner with cross‑functional teams to review business changes, transactions, system implementations, and new products or services for state and local tax implications.
  • Coordinate with external advisors and service providers, as needed, on compliance, controversy, planning, and special projects.
  • Develop and maintain state tax calendars, audit trackers, process documentation, and filing procedures to support a well‑controlled compliance environment.
  • Review journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting work papers related to state and local tax accounts.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to staff or shared service resources supporting state and local tax activities.
  • Assist with tax planning initiatives and risk assessments to optimize the company’s state and local tax position while maintaining compliance.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field required.
  • CPA, MST, JD, or other relevant tax credential preferred.
  • 6+ years of progressive tax experience, including significant hands‑on experience with state and local income/franchise tax and sales and use tax.
  • Strong knowledge of multistate tax concepts, including nexus, apportionment, allocation, sourcing, taxability, exemptions, and audit procedures.
  • Experience supporting state income tax provision calculations and related accounting requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines across numerous jurisdictions.
