The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining accurate project financial records, supporting project profitability, and providing timely financial insight to project stakeholders.
Position OverviewThe Project Accountant is responsible for the financial record-keeping and reporting accuracy of assigned construction projects. This role manages job costing, invoice reconciliation, labor cost allocation, billing support, change order tracking, and monthly financial close activities. Working closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, and the Accounting team, the Project Accountant ensures that project financials accurately reflect project performance throughout the project lifecycle.
The ideal candidate will have experience in construction accounting, strong analytical abilities, and a solid understanding of job cost reporting and project financial controls.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain accurate job cost records for assigned electrical construction projects.
- Process and reconcile subcontractor and vendor invoices against contracts, purchase orders, and approved change orders.
- Track and allocate labor costs in accordance with approved project budgets and labor classifications.
- Prepare monthly job cost reports, including committed costs, cost-to-complete, and projected final cost analysis.
- Reconcile project billings, including AIA pay applications, against contract values and supporting cost documentation.
- Support monthly and year-end financial close activities, including accruals, work-in-progress schedules, and revenue recognition.
- Manage change order documentation and ensure approved changes are properly reflected within project cost and billing records.
- Monitor project cash flow, retention balances, and outstanding receivables in coordination with project and finance leadership.
- Reconcile project-related expenses, including equipment, tools, consumables, rentals, and fuel costs.
- Partner with Project Managers and field leadership to resolve cost coding discrepancies and maintain financial accuracy.
- Assist with internal and external audits by providing accurate project financial documentation.
- Ensure compliance with company accounting policies, contractual obligations, and financial reporting requirements.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- 2-5 years of accounting experience within construction, electrical contracting, engineering, or a related industry.
- Experience with job costing and project accounting within a construction environment is strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of construction accounting and ERP platforms such as Accu Bid, Procore, Vista Viewpoint, or similar systems.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the ability to work with large datasets.
- Understanding of AIA billing, retainage, and construction contract structures, including GMP, T&M, and unit-price contracts.
- Strong attention to detail and exceptional reconciliation skills.
- Ability to communicate financial information effectively to both accounting and non-accounting stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
