Position Description

Harris County is offering an exciting internship opportunity for individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in local government operations. The goal of this internship is to give prospective public administrators real experience in county government administration and research. Throughout the internship, interns will primarily work with the Harris County Office of Management and Budget team on a project for the county that will be used to inform future budget office projects and provide baseline information and comparisons across different counties and departments.

The intern will be able to take away some research and writing projects, as well as a greater knowledge of how County government works. The project does have a set framework, but there is room for further research on the intern's areas of interest.

The primary focus will be working within the department and key stakeholders to identify the relevant policies and procedures into a central repository and perform entry-level administrative duties as needed

INTERNSHIP DATES

* Summer 2026 (June - August)

Duties & Responsibilities:

* Assist in compiling a list of financial policies and procedures across Harris County across various sites and databases.

* Provide information to management clearly, accurately, and consistently by assembling and summarizing data and preparing/presenting findings, analysis and recommendations. Ensure that reporting is timely, accurate, and meets the requirements of the audience for whom the reports are drafted.

* Assist in gathering reports, documents, or information required related to the depository bank transition.

* Assist in managing accounts payable.

* Document/update financial processes.

* Assist with document retention i.e. scanning, filing, organizing, etc

Requirements

Education and Experience:

* Currently enrolled as a full-time student in an undergraduate or graduate program with a major in Political Science, Public Administration, Public Policy, Social Science, Business, Finance, Accounting, or related fields

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

* Excellent communication skills, including presentation, grammar, and writing skills

* Ability to work quickly, flexibly, and accurately to meet deadlines

* Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel and other computer-based data information systems

* Excellent analytical skills

* Excellent organizational and skills; effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks/initiatives

* Ability to work independently

* Ability to work well with the public, County personnel, external organizations, and financial institutions; builds and maintains cooperative and effective working relationships with others

* Effectively prioritizes, identifies, and solves problems
