TxDOT offers the chance to be part of work that truly matters. We are seeking an Administrative Assistant I or II based in Houston, Texas, to support operations at our Traffic Systems Area Office located at 6810 Old Katy Road.
In this role, you will provide essential administrative and clerical support that helps keep the area office organized and running day to day. Responsibilities include coordinating schedules and meetings, processing purchasing requests, maintaining files and records, tracking inventory, and supporting communication across the team. You will also assist with reporting, documentation, and general office coordination, including support during emergency operations when needed.
You will work side by side with inspection staff and leadership, helping make sure the team has what they need to stay on track and respond to the demands of a busy, fast paced operation. - Answer telephone, evaluate requests, route messages, and serve as receptionist or front desk assistant.
- Edit correspondence, reports, forms, and documents for correct format, spelling, grammar, punctuation, style, and clarity.
- Maintain records and inventories of materials, supplies and equipment.
- Prepare and distribute correspondence.
- Receive, sort, open, evaluate content, and distribute mail.
- Enter and retrieve data on a computer.
- Review, prepare, and/or negotiate applicable program purchases for services, office materials, supplies, tools and/or equipment; monitor contracts.
- Deliver and pick up confidential or time‑sensitive mail/correspondence.
- Create requisitions, blanket purchase orders, and enter receipts in People Soft in support of the division or district.
- Attend meetings with supervisor; take notes, summarize, and follow up on actions.
- Research and compile information for reports or inquiries.
- Process receipts and invoices for payment.
- Coordinate travel services, including making arrangements, securing transportation and lodging, and submitting reimbursement on the traveler’s behalf.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
ExperienceNo experience required. 1 year administrative or clerical support, customer service, business operations, communications, or related experience.
Licenses and CertificationsValid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Competencies and Skills- Knowledge of applicable computer systems and applications.

- Proofreading and reviewing documents for clarity and consistency.

- Automated record‑keeping methods.
- Researching, evaluating, and interpreting complex information.
- Public relations and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external individuals and groups.
- Coordinating and scheduling activities and resources.
- Composing correspondence and technical documents.
- Recording notes at meetings.
Administrative Assistant I and II:
Sedentary work; lift up to 10 lbs. at a time and occasionally carry files or small tools.
