Financial Aid Assistant (Part-time) – Staff Pool

Summary Facilitate the customer service center and provide educational assistance to the general public, especially economically disadvantaged individuals, by offering general information and assistance with the application process and referrals to external funding and social service agencies. Direct internal communications within the Houston Community College System on behalf of students. Additionally, this position will provide secretarial and clerical support for the department as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as primary customer service representative to promote student access, success and customer satisfaction.
- Perform document tracking; collect, manage and maintain sensitive records (financial statements, college records, medical records, citizenship documents, divorce decrees, etc.).
- Analyze and interpret federal, state and institutional regulations to assist students with applications for federal, state and institutional funds.
- Communicate orally and in writing with students to ensure accuracy and completeness of applications to meet registration and fee payment requirements.
- Transmit, electronically, student financial aid applications and needed updates (EDE).
- Assist with financial aid orientation.
- Provide guidance and assistance for students applying online.
- Answer telephone calls, greet visitors, respond to routine inquiries, take and relay messages.
- Use word processing software and student information to develop correspondence and retrieve information.
- Maintain inventory and order office equipment and services within prescribed procedures and agreements.
- Establish and maintain student and program files and records.
- Schedule student appointments.
- Generate award letters.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required;
Associate’s degree preferred. - Minimum of one year experience working in a financial aid office preferred.
- Proficiency in personal computer use.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
