General Foreman - Environmental Remediation & Earthwork
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced General Foreman to lead field operations on environmental remediation and earthwork projects, including coal ash impoundment and landfill closure work. The General Foreman is responsible for supervising crews and equipment operations, coordinating daily activities, enforcing safety and environmental compliance, and ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project plans and regulatory requirements. This role requires strong technical knowledge of heavy equipment operations, particularly in environmentally sensitive and regulated conditions, as well as proven leadership and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
+ Supervise and coordinate daily field operations for environmental remediation and earthwork activities, including coal combustion residual (CCR) impoundment and landfill closure projects.
+ Lead and direct equipment operators, laborers, and subcontractors to ensure productivity, quality, and safety objectives are met.
+ Plan and sequence work activities such as dewatering, ash excavation, moisture conditioning, trenching, sumping, grading, and material relocation.
+ Oversee operation of specialty equipment including long reach excavators, low ground pressure (LGP) dozers and excavators, and GPS-guided equipment.
+ Ensure work is performed safely in environmentally sensitive areas such as ash ponds, landfills, wetlands, and remediation sites.
+ Enforce compliance with project plans, specifications, erosion and sediment control requirements, and health, safety, and environmental plans.
+ Monitor site conditions including slopes, soft soils, saturated ground, containment systems, and work near water bodies to maintain stable and safe operations.
+ Coordinate with project management, environmental staff, survey crews, inspectors, and subcontractors to achieve grading tolerances and project milestones.
+ Support and oversee installation of environmental systems such as liners, caps, geosynthetics, drainage features, and soil cover systems.
+ Conduct daily safety meetings and promote a proactive safety culture in compliance with OSHA and site-specific requirements.
+ Verify daily equipment inspections are completed, address maintenance needs, and coordinate repairs as necessary.
+ Maintain accurate daily reports including manpower, equipment utilization, production quantities, and field activities.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
+ Minimum
5-7 years of experience in environmental remediation or heavy civil earthwork construction, including supervisory or lead operator responsibilities.
+ Demonstrated hands-on experience with long reach and low ground pressure excavators, preferably on coal ash pond closure, dredging, or similar remediation projects.
+ Strong working knowledge of GPS-guided equipment, including system setup and use.
+ Proven experience working in soft soils, saturated conditions, and around water.
+ Familiarity with extraction of mired equipment and working on construction cribbing or mats.
+ Knowledge of environmental remediation practices including CCR material handling, contaminated soil management, and erosion and sediment control.
+ Ability to read, interpret, and execute work from site plans, grades, and survey staking.
+ Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
+ Commitment to safety, environmental protection, and quality workmanship.
+ Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Prior General Foreman or Superintendent experience on coal ash impoundment closure or CCR Rule-regulated projects.
+ Experience on landfill closures, sediment removal, dredging, or large-scale environmental remediation projects.
+ OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour Construction Safety certification.
+ HAZWOPER 40-hour certification with current 8-hour refresher.
+ MSHA 40-hour training.
