Position

Summary

Texas Materials is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Shuttle Buggy Operator to join our paving operations team. The Shuttle Buggy Operator is responsible for safely operating a Material Transfer Vehicle (MTV), commonly referred to as a Shuttle Buggy, to transfer asphalt mix from haul trucks to the paving machine. This position plays a critical role in maintaining continuous paving operations, reducing material segregation, improving pavement quality, and supporting overall project productivity.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Safely operate a Shuttle Buggy (Material Transfer Vehicle) during asphalt paving operations.
  • Transfer asphalt mix from haul trucks to the paver while maintaining continuous material flow.
  • Coordinate with paver operators, truck drivers, foremen, and paving crews to ensure efficient production.
  • Monitor asphalt material consistency and assist in minimizing segregation and thermal variations.
  • Position equipment accurately to maintain safe and efficient paving operations.
  • Perform pre-shift, post-shift, and routine inspections of equipment.
  • Complete required equipment inspection reports and maintenance documentation.
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and perform basic preventative maintenance.
  • Identify and promptly report equipment malfunctions, defects, and repair needs.
  • Follow all company safety policies, DOT regulations, OSHA standards, and project requirements.
  • Assist other members of the paving crew as needed to support project completion.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and daily job briefings.
Qualifications Education
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of heavy equipment operating experience preferred.
  • Previous experience operating a Shuttle Buggy or Material Transfer Vehicle strongly preferred.
  • Experience in asphalt paving, road construction, or heavy highway construction preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of asphalt paving processes and roadway construction practices.
  • Ability to safely operate heavy paving equipment in active construction environments.
  • Understanding of material transfer operations and paving quality standards.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to recognize and address potential safety hazards.
  • Commitment to quality workmanship and production goals.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced construction environments.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit and operate equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to frequently climb, stoop, bend, and access equipment safely.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, and cold temperatures.
  • Ability to work around moving machinery, traffic, dust, and noise.
Working Conditions
  • Outdoor road construction and asphalt paving environments.
  • Exposure to hot asphalt materials, dust, fumes, vibration, and moving equipment.
  • Extended work hours, overtime, weekend work, and overnight shifts may be required based on project schedules.
  • Travel to various job sites within the assigned region may be required.
Preferred Certifications
  • Valid Texas Driver's License with acceptable driving record.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification preferred.
  • Heavy equipment operator training or certification preferred.
  • Road construction and paving experience strongly preferred.
