Position Overview

The Heavy Equipment Operator operates and controls all types of heavy construction equipment, including graders, dozers, excavators, and rubber‑tire loaders, to construct roads, bridges, and other infrastructure. The role requires safe, efficient operation with minimal direct supervision while adhering to project plans and safety requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Drive, maneuver, and operate all types of heavy construction equipment.
  • Cut and maintain slope or grade as called out in project plans.
  • Follow project plans and directions from the foreman and superintendent.
  • Take actions to avoid potential hazards and obstructions, including other equipment, workers, and falling objects.
  • Load and haul construction materials, earth, and other heavy materials.
  • Account for and report daily activity, maintaining accurate work records.
  • Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively over the phone or radio.
  • Comply with all safety requirements and participate in safety meetings.
  • Perform routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Ensure company equipment is stored safely.
  • Coordinate machine actions with crew members using hand or audio signals.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and maintain a safe working environment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years’ experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator.
  • Pass drug and background screening.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous underground utility experience.
  • Current valid state commercial driver’s license and current medical card.
  • Experience as a multi‑skilled heavy equipment operator.
  • Equipment certification.
