Job Description Summary / TWC Summary

The Radio, Television, Film & Journalism departments at Texas Southern University are seeking applications for a full time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position (9‑months). We are particularly interested in candidates who take a creative and critical approach to the study of media and journalism, with a focus on the current status, multimedia character, and social and political influence of media, news/journalism in a rapidly changing media environment.

Our mass media and journalism programs emphasize creative innovation to drive content creation, social justice, and nonfiction storytelling. The successful candidate is one who is highly motivated and experienced in coordinating innovation projects to support the daily operations, communications, and initiatives of the teaching, learning, and new/digital media transformation team. This candidate shuttles as both practicing professor and special project coordinator;

leads creative project ideas and collaborates with the departmental chairs on feasible schemes with both short‑term and long‑term organizational development capacities. Candidate will teach at least two graduate or undergraduate courses (face‑to‑face, hybrid, evening, weekend); advise undergraduate and graduate students; integrate scholarly and creative elements, and ultimately lead to the accomplishment of creative academic innovations goals.

Essential Duties Summary
  • Lead the School of Communication’s innovation team to manage the website, creative hub, academic journal hub, news magazine, and other publications.
  • Meet regularly with the Dean, Department Chairs to plan for upcoming initiatives and accomplish shared goals.
  • Collaborate on layout, designs, digital content, to ensure effective and timely delivery of projects and programs.
  • Research new project ideas and assist with the coordination and implementation strategies.
  • Provide advising and support to undergraduate and graduate students.

% FTE: 1

Hiring Range: $57,683.12 - $74,988.00

Education
  • A minimum of a Doctorate degree in media or related fields from an accredited institution is required.
  • A degree in media Art; certificate in Commercial Art or a closely related field with focus on visual content creation, and applied graphics.
Required Licensing/Certification

Required: None required.

Preferred: Valid Texas Driver’s License.

Work Experience
  • At least three (3) experience teaching at an institution of higher education.
  • At least five (years) experience in media production and management; expert knowledge of graphics design programs such as Quark Xpress, InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator; expert knowledge of web graphics design programs such as Web Builder, Word Press web content system, and compatible themes; strong technical skills, and artistic and conceptual‑thinking abilities.
  • Delivery of all digital communication project work and demonstrate experience in all aspect of digital production in digital media.
  • Two years of demonstrated experience in implementation of project management
