Role Description
This full-time, on-site Reporter role is based at the University of Houston in Houston, TX. The Reporter is responsible for researching, pitching, and developing news stories that highlight university initiatives, events, student and faculty achievements, and community impact. Daily tasks include conducting interviews, gathering and verifying information, writing clear and accurate news articles, and collaborating with editors and communications staff to meet deadlines.
The role may involve producing content for multiple platforms, including web, print, and multimedia channels, while adhering to journalistic ethics and university guidelines. The Reporter is expected to maintain strong source networks, monitor campus and local developments, and contribute ideas to enhance UH's storytelling and public presence.
- Candidates should possess strong Reporting and News Writing skills for developing accurate, timely, and engaging stories.
- Candidates should possess excellent Communication and Writing skills for interviews, articles, and collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
- Candidates should possess Multimedia skills for creating content suited to digital platforms, social media, and visual storytelling.
- Relevant experience in journalism, media, or communications, preferably in higher education or public affairs.
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Ability to work on-site, manage multiple assignments, meet tight deadlines, and follow ethical and legal standards in reporting.
- Strong attention to detail, fact-checking abilities, and familiarity with AP style or equivalent news writing standards.
