The University Landscape Architect provides expertise in landscape architecture and site development across the University of Houston campus. This role ensures that all landscape initiatives align with the Campus Master Plan, University Design Guidelines, and sustainability goals. This position combines design excellence with operational oversight, creating a cohesive, sustainable, and visually consistent campus environment that enhances the student experience and reflects the university's long-term vision.

Pursuant to the State of Texas Executive Order No. GA-48, this position researches, works on, or has access to critical infrastructure and requires the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the University infrastructure. This position requires personnel be routinely reviewed to determine whether or not criminal history or continuous connections for the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary might prevent the employee from being able to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure.

Responsibilities
  • Assists the University Architect in managing and implementing the Campus Landscape Master Plan.
  • Manages and oversees the Campus Landscape Master Plan.
  • Develops and maintains Campus Landscape Guidelines and Master Specifications.
  • Monitors campus development to ensure landscaping projects meet current and future needs.
  • Participates in design reviews for capital and non-capital projects to confirm compliance with master plan and design standards.
  • Conducts studies and assessments to support campus planning initiatives.
  • Supervises staff and outside consultants.
  • Oversees assigned projects to ensure objectives are met.
  • Assists with pre-project planning to align with exterior landscape expectations.
  • Develops creative solutions for campus beautification projects.
  • Manages assessments of outdoor spaces including quads, courtyards, plazas, walkways, and naturalized landscapes.
  • Performs field assessments, evaluating site conditions, grading, drainage, plant health, and construction progress.
  • Translates site knowledge into effective design and planning decisions.
  • Visits construction sites and supports project management during construction.
  • Collaborates daily with campus supervisors to coordinate landscape operations, including routine maintenance, chemical applications/treatments, and overall grounds care.
  • Leads or supports sustainability initiatives such as stormwater management, native/adaptive plantings, irrigation efficiency, and habitat restoration.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

MQ:
Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed.

Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited institution.

Experience:

Requires a minimum of five (5) years of directly job-related experience. Preferred:
Minimum of 5 years of directly related design and field coordination experience; 7 years preferred. Experience with campus planning in higher education or similar environments. Experience in higher education, municipal, or campus environments. Familiarity with campus master plans, design guidelines, and accessibility standards. Experience conducting field inspections or overseeing landscape construction.

Certification/Licensing:
Must be a Registered Professional Landscape Architect in the State of Texas.
