Project Architect/Designer (Houston)

Michael Hsu Office of Architecture is an award-winning, fully integrated architecture and interior design practice with offices in Austin and Houston. Our work is rooted in hospitality and placemaking and includes diverse projects that range from large mixed-use developments, adaptive reuse projects, public realm design, architectural branding, single family homes, hotels, restaurants, work spaces, and bespoke furniture design. We work throughout Texas and across the country in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and Denver.

the Position

We are seeking an experienced Project Architect/Designer to join our Houston office. This position is ideal for a designer who is ready to take ownership of meaningful portions of a project while continuing to grow their technical, design, and project leadership skills. Working alongside experienced project leaders and design teams, this individual will contribute to projects across a variety of scales and typologies, helping translate design concepts into thoughtful, well-executed built work.

The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in architectural design and documentation, a curiosity for how buildings are assembled, and a desire to contribute to both the creative and technical aspects of project delivery. They are comfortable collaborating across disciplines, communicating clearly with team members and consultants, and managing their work with increasing independence and accountability.

This is a hybrid position based in Houston, TX, requiring a minimum of three days per week working in person from our Austin office.

Responsibilities Include
  • Contributing to the design and delivery of projects across a variety of scales, typologies, and phases of design
  • Developing design concepts and translating them into coordinated drawings, models, details, and construction documents
  • Preparing project documentation, specifications, and presentation materials in collaboration with project teams
  • Coordinating with consultants and internal team members to maintain project alignment and documentation quality
  • Supporting construction administration efforts, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and assisting with field observations
  • Taking ownership of assigned portions of a project while proactively communicating progress, questions, and potential coordination issues
  • Contributing to technical problem-solving and design discussions throughout the life of a project
    Participating on multiple concurrent projects in various capacities
Job Requirements
  • 3+ years of professional experience in architecture, including design and construction document production for commercial, hospitality, or residential projects
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Architecture from an accredited university
  • Ability to commute to our Houston, TX office a minimum of three days per week
  • Proficiency in Revit, Sketch Up, Adobe Creative Suite, and AutoCAD
  • Working knowledge of architectural practice, including design, documentation, detailing, building materials, building codes, and construction technologies
  • Demonstrated design ability and a strong portfolio of academic and professional work
  • Strong technical skills, creative problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal, written, and graphic communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and contribute effectively across multiple projects simultaneously
  • Positive attitude, intellectual curiosity, and willingness to collaborate within a team environment
Work Environment &

Physical Requirements

This position is primarily performed in an office environment, with periodic travel to project sites, construction sites, client meetings, vendor showrooms, and other project-related locations.

To perform the essential functions of this position, an employee must be able to:

  • Remain stationary and work at a computer workstation for extended periods throughout the workday
