Primary Purpose
Provide instructional services to eligible students who are unable to attend school for medical or other approved reasons. The Homebound Teacher ensures continuity of instruction, supports students in meeting course and IEP goals, and collaborates with campus staff, families, and service providers to facilitate a successful transition back to the regular school setting when appropriate.
Qualifications
Education/Certification
* Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
* Valid Texas teaching certificate appropriate to the assigned subject(s)/grade level(s)
* Special Education certification preferred (if applicable to district needs)
* Valid Texas driver's license and reliable transportation
Special Knowledge/Skills
* Knowledge of TEKS and district curriculum
* Knowledge of instructional strategies to support diverse learners, including students with disabilities and health impairments
* Ability to differentiate instruction and adapt materials for individual student needs
* Strong organizational, time management, and record-keeping skills
* Ability to work independently in a variety of home/community settings
* Effective communication and collaboration skills with students, parents, campus staff, and medical professionals
* Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow all district and legal requirements (FERPA, IDEA, Section 504, etc.)
Experience
* Minimum of two (2) years of successful classroom teaching experience preferred
* Experience working with students with medical or significant educational needs preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Instructional Support
* Provide direct instruction to students receiving homebound services in accordance with the student's ARD/IEP, 504 plan, or general education plan of service.
* Implement district curriculum, course expectations, and teacher of record assignments to ensure students remain on track academically.
* Develop and follow an instructional schedule based on the number of hours approved for each student.
* Adapt assignments, materials, and assessments to meet individual student needs and documented accommodations/modifications.
* Monitor student progress and provide feedback to the student, parent/guardian, and teacher of record.
Collaboration & Communication
* Serve as a liaison between the student, parent/guardian, campus teachers, counselor, case manager, and other related service providers.
* Coordinate with the campus teacher(s) of record to obtain assignments, projects, tests, grading criteria, and instructional materials.
* Return completed work to the campus in a timely manner and ensure grades are submitted according to campus/district timelines.
* Participate in ARD/IEP meetings, 504 meetings, and other relevant conferences as needed to plan and review homebound services.
* Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding schedules, expectations, student progress, and any concerns.
Compliance & Documentation
* Maintain accurate and timely documentation of service hours, instructional logs, contact logs, and student progress as required by district procedures.
* Follow all district policies and procedures related to homebound instruction, including safety guidelines for home visits and confidentiality requirements.
* Assist in collecting medical documentation and other required paperwork, as requested, to support continued eligibility for homebound services.
* Submit required reports and data to campus and district administration within established timelines.
Student Support & Environment
* Establish and maintain a positive, respectful learning environment in the home or designated setting.
* Encourage student engagement, independence, and self-advocacy.
* Reinforce appropriate student behavior and social-emotional skills in alignment with campus and district expectations.
* Support a smooth transition when students return to campus by sharing relevant information with the campus team.
