Engineering Undergraduate Programs Salary:
Commensurate with experience
Description:
The College of Engineering at the University of Houston invites applications for a non-tenure- track (NTT) faculty in the rank of Instructional Assistant Professor or Instructional Associate Professor to potentially begin in the January 2026, or the start of the Academic Year. Successful applicants will join the First Year Experience (FYE) faculty team, whose main role is two-fold: (i) teaching the common first-year curriculum in the Cullen College, and (ii) contribute to the various student success initiatives in the college, which include the Program for Mastery of Engineering Studies (PROMES), the Honors Engineering Program (HEP), and the National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenges Scholars Program (NAE-GCSP).
This faculty team works closely with the college's academic advisors, our various student organizations, and with faculty in many departments with the goal of equipping our students for success in their full academic journey. It is a very high priority for the college to provide a positive and supportive environment where students are enabled to succeed academically while gaining an understanding of the engineering profession and its disciplines, and our instructional faculty play a key role in this enterprise.
Duties
The main responsibility of these positions is teaching. At the same time, there is an expectation that our instructional faculty will also contribute to service and administrative tasks as required in the college. The annual teaching course load is twelve contact hours per semester, often with several sections of the same course in any semester. Course assignments will be at the undergraduate level, focusing on first-year engineering courses and a limited number of sophomore engineering courses as well.
While most of the teaching duties will be at the main campus of UH, we expect that some teaching would be delivered online or at the UH-HCC (Houston Community College) Engineering Academies at Katy and at HCC-Southeast. The FYE faculty work as a team, developing course curriculum and content, along with working together during the semesters on delivery and student interactions.
These courses emphasize design and problem-solving using engineering tools and software.
Terms
These are full-time, benefits eligible, non-tenure-track positions, as an instructional assistant or instructional associate professor. Appointments are made on an annual 9-month basis, salary and rank commensurate with experience.
Requirements/Qualifications
The ideal applicant for each of these positions will be able to demonstrate the ability to function in a collaborative atmosphere with multiple stakeholders. Candidates must possess a solid commitment to engineering education using experiential learning and should demonstrate excellent communication skills. Applicants must possess a PhD or equivalent in an engineering discipline including engineering education, a related education field, or a related STEM field.
Preferred Qualifications
Exceptional candidates will have experience working with first-year engineering programs, with project-based learning, with NAE Grand Challenges, and/or have a record of scholarly activities in the area of engineering education.
Application Submission
Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled. In addition to completing the online application, candidates are required to submit a cover letter highlighting the candidate's strengths and interest in the position, curriculum vitae, statement on teaching philosophy, and the names of three professional references
Official transcripts are required for a faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of the final candidates.
All positions at the University of Houston-System are security sensitive and will require a criminal history check. Individuals conducting research in critical infrastructure areas (i.e., communication infrastructure systems, cybersecurity systems, electric grid, hazardous waste treatment systems, and/or water treatment facilities) are subject to regular review to ensure the security and integrity of the research is maintained.
The University of Houston System and its universities are Equal Opportunity Institutions. Everyone is encouraged to apply.
