JOB TITLE: Dyslexia Teacher

REPORTS TO: Coordinator-Dyslexia & 504

WAGE: Exempt

PAY GRADE: Teacher Salary Scale

PRIMARY

PURPOSE:

The Dyslexia Teacher provides students diagnosed with dyslexia or suspected of having dyslexia with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them reach their potential by developing competencies and skills in the area of reading and writing.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate in grade levels assigned

Preferred:

  • Three years’ experience as a successful classroom teacher in the area reading, language arts or special education
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
  • Knowledge of the characteristics of dyslexia
  • Knowledge and experience with research-based strategies in the teaching of reading
  • Knowledge of norm-referenced assessments used in the diagnosis of students with dyslexia
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to use assessment results to shape instruction
  • Ability to analyze data and use data tools
  • Ability to provide effective accelerated and differentiated instruction
  • Ability to work in collaborative team-based environments
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Implements the district selected dyslexia program with fidelity
  • Maintains accurate written documentation of student work and progress
  • Administers adopted reading assessments and other appropriate instruments to determine the student’s reading strengths and needs
  • Takes weekly/daily running records to guide instructional decisions for meeting the individual needs of the students
  • Provides intensive accelerated instruction that is differentiated to meet the individual needs of the student
  • Utilizes multiple instructional resources such as Wilson Reading Program, Region IV Dyslexia training, etc.
  • Adheres to the District’s referral procedures for the identification and provision of instruction for students with dyslexia
  • Actively participates with campus teams including Section 504, RtI and ARD committees
  • Assists principal and teachers in analyzing assessment data to formulate instructional plans for students with dyslexia
  • Assists and collaborates with campus staff in implementing effective intervention plans for students with dyslexia
  • Maintains on‑going communication with classroom teachers to ensure a successful transition for students, including accommodations and their effectiveness.
  • Maintains on‑going communication with parents to discuss student progress and reinforce reading strategies at home
  • Presents and/or facilitates professional learning about dyslexia to campus and district staff
  • Performs other duties as assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling. This position will also require traveling within the district. Mental demands: ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory of instructional programs;

ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
