St. Thomas High School, an all-boys private, Catholic college-preparatory school for grades 9-12 in Houston, Texas, has an enrollment of approximately 800 students. Founded in 1900, the school is committed to providing a multi-dimensional education through a challenging college-preparatory curriculum and a wide range of artistic, athletic, and leadership opportunities.
Role
The College Counselor plays a critical role in helping St. Thomas High School achieve its mission of teaching goodness, discipline and knowledge by actively contributing to a best‑in‑class counseling program. The counselor cultivates and maintains relationships with a cohort of students and their families from 9th grade through graduation, supporting intellectual, social, and personal growth and helping students make informed choices about college.
Duties
Counsel a portfolio of students in the development of a four‑year plan culminating in applying, being accepted, and matriculating to college.Build, cultivate, and maintain relationships with college representatives, alumni, and other academic enrichment opportunities to assist students in matriculation.Maintain accurate student records while ensuring privacy and confidentiality.Consult with parents on academic or personal matters and provide referrals to teachers.Provide an open‑door policy for parents and students, including walk‑in and emergency meetings.Offer individualized support for school selection and application navigation.Conduct information sessions and workshops on the college application process, financial assistance programs, scholarships, and financial aid.Process college applications, including writing recommendation letters for seniors.Stay informed on college admissions trends through professional development.Provide short‑term counseling to students with personal and emotional concerns.Act in accordance with state law and professional discretion to report suspected abuse or neglect.Participate in the school’s religious life and maintain a pastoral attitude toward the community.Perform other duties as assigned.Qualifications
Master’s degree in Counseling, Student Affairs, Education, or related field (required).2–5 years experience as a College Counselor at a college‑preparatory high school or a similar role in a university Admissions Office, with a successful record of student admissions.Familiarity with the goals and mission of Catholic education in a college‑preparatory setting.Strong interpersonal, communication, computer, and organizational skills; ability to meet the needs of a diverse student and parent population; knowledge of colleges, admission policies, and financial aid procedures.Willingness to take initiative and contribute to a dynamic team.The above statements are intended to describe the general nature of work performed in this classification and are not an exhaustive list.
